Chat? No! Just ads? Yes!

Post by patrix »

This is what chat has become. I think we need a serious review of ads on chat. It is spamming, within the rules, it is still spam.

it's still early in the shard-morning tho... But separate add & chat channels wouldn't hurt :)

is it within the chat rules tho? generally it is exactly 30 mins apart which generally would appear to be scripted afk but it certainly is not ten chat lines apart. It does not bother me so much but i fully understand why it does bother a lot of people.

I totally agree! Too many ads! Is this why they always park at the bank while not playing? just to spam ads every half hour? I do most of my playing late at night (pacific time) most of the chat dialogue at these hours is spam. Yes, technically they are within the rules, but when there is no other chat going on it gets a bit old. Maybe we can do a market chat, like guild or party chat. and it has an option to turn it off. That would rock!

I know that ads are within the rules when they adhere to the time/chat guidelines, but I'm one who thinks that global chat has become over-run with ads as well. It is a rolling billboard these days, imo. I personally don't care for it, but that is just me.

I would suggest altering the codex to either ban ads altogether or creating a separate trade channel that someone can join (or not). That way people can still advertise to people who want to see ads, but general chat is spared.

Another suggestion is to make people who want to run ads instead post them on the forums. They still get to sell their stuff, only interested parties need to look, and global chat is spared.

In either case, the +Admins job would probably be easier not having to police ad spam on top of all the other tasks they have to perform, AND global chat would be cleaned up quite a bit for those that it bothers.

I don't mind having "spam" in the world chat while it proceed from a player and not a spam macro like Alejandro/Aryck/Others...

Implementing a new chat will take (probably) a lot of time, plus almost nobody will have it on.

As my knowledge i think will be enough just banning auto-spamming macros.

One can also put the spammers on ignore, but i dont see that as a solution. There could be trading channel [t, which you can have either on or off like WC, with same rules of advertising like now. Its kind of annoying now if debate is going on, and then 5 lines of spam drops in.

Trade channel please.

The main purpose of the current anti-spam rules are to prevent the very repetitive messages, for example those that fill up the journal, every few seconds, that make the chat unusable.
Though with a few people advertising, within the current rules, it can get annoying as well.

There is a separate channel planned, and although it can be added rather easy to the current system, i'll stick to the plan of the overall chat&portal upgrade that is already under way.

Actually, I think some of the messages in the example aren't within the rules. There should be at least 10 lines of other people's text in between.

To alleviate the issue right now, perhaps a small change to the rule - only once per hour, and 20 lines of other people's text? Perhaps a rule that says you have to be at the keyboard when making these announcements, to prevent the 24/7 brainwashing?

Would it be possible to check the last couple of chat posts a person has posted against their current post.

If they match (spaces numbers and punctuation don't count towards the match to prevent abuse) they get an automatic AFK check?

People play/sell, when they are here. For afk selling we have market on forums.

If you notice, many just run a macro afk with a 30m loop. And obv the macro don't respect the 10 lines, as Patrix proved in the fist post.

I'm not sure about the secondary channel option because (as my experience) the will still use the global chat or just spam so much the trade chat and will be impossible to search in it. The best option for me is what you suggested: avoid the afk spamming.

I had bumped my ad back to every 45 minutes. But when I saw that a lot of times, there was no chat at all in that time frame, I stopped my afk script altogether.

I agree with +C, I think the ads should be once per hour, at least 20 lines apart, and attended only. It'd be nice also to restrict advertising the same vendor shop/event/champ/whatever as someone else did. So if someone else advertised that same thing already, you shouldn't. But, that's a bit more of a pain to keep track of.

Exactly, you may restrict it more. But each restriction will made everything harder to track, for players and gms :(

Anyway, the actual situation really need to be fixed. Hard to find a solution for everyone :?
