In the collector's quest, is there a trick to getting the rainbow pearls?

Visit Elwood McCarrin, The Well-Known Collector on the patio of the Provisioner Store (outside the bank) at New Haven. (Click on Elwood once and select talk).

He will ask you to fish up some Rainbow Pearls from the lake outside. You do not need fishing skill, but will need a fishing pole which may be purchased from the NPC on the dock (opposite the provisioners to the south). To fish, double click the pole and target the water. You need to fish up 6 rainbow pearls. As you fish you will get one of two messages:
'you pull a shellfish out of the water, but it doesn't have a rainbow pearl'
'you pull a shellfish out of the water, and find a rainbow pearl inside of it'

When you have fished up 6 rainbow pearls return and talk to Elwood.

Could the new fishing system have nerfed the quest? My guildie, who's attempting this quest, isn't getting those messages.

it isnt working for me either. I bought a pole from fisherman and never got any rainbow pearls and never got a message saying i got rainbow crab and no pearls. I also made a pole with plain wood, and a pole with bamboo, I tried using hooks on all poles and still no rainbow pearls. All I got was fish, regular pearls and footwear. I canceled the quest and tried again and still no rainbow pearls. I fished on the dock, west and east of dock, on the island in middle of lake. Nothing works.
Is the quest broken or is the quest broken.

I sent in a ticket on it, and +R replied saying it will be fixed on next restart but I dont know when that will be.
