Sunken house

HI all,
I have looked and looked and can find nothing to help me out on the Wiki or the in the Forum. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.
I have two houses. They are joined. They are both sunken to the foundation and one of them is sunken to the first floor. When I put up walls in the sunken first floor I can not longer walk in and out of the house at ground level except where the foundation steps would be. There are white lines on the ground where the walls are underneath and I cannot cross them to enter the yard (house) from the outside, as it there is still a foundation there.
I was hoping to make the yard look like part of the surrounding terrain and to be able to walk in and out at any point.
What do I need to do or not do? Without walls on the sunken first floor I cannot put in a floor on the second level (ground level).
I hope that this makes sense and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
