A challenge to all the very wealthy nobles on the Excelsior Shard, and new comers.
Are you happy? What good is 20, 30, 50 million in GP. Do all these material possessions bring you happiness? Would they really bring your happiness in the real world? You might think about that..
Put all your gold on the lawn and let it decay into nothingness. Give your material wealth away and let your house collapse.
Strip naked and put on the robe you were given when you were born and see if you can survive. No killing, no accumulation of gold and living from day to day. Like the wandering healers, live your life as a contemplative only begging and healing to survive... Go to the dungeons and heal fallen warriors and injured monsters that are out of battle.
(Begging is a skill. Who among you has 100 in begging, what does it bring?)
You might think I am being religious, but I'm not and I am not religious in the least. I'm suggesting a way to increase the depth of the game through genuine role playing. We live in an excessively materialistic society that revolves around the shopping mall .. What would it be like to deny yourself even if it was just in video game?...
How can the Excelsior Shard distinguish itself as a unique instance of UO? This is an interesting approach.
Welcome me, I am, Danish and Regio, and Larkin
The contemplative way of the wandering healer
Re: The contemplative way of the wandering healer
I am a GM Begger
I started with a robe...
Begged for gold
Bought a pickaxe... sold the ore
Bought more pickaxes.. train tailoring... made myself pants and a shirt
I kept mining more and killed pigs and boars. I train camping to cook em so I wouldn't go hungry.
I made leather sleeves and tunic and kept on mining.
I got very skilled and traded my leather wares for chainmail from chainmail to platemail.
I kept mining more ore and with the money I save I bought my first little shack.
Yes, I was a GM Begger but God gave me two hands and two strong legs to stand on.

What are the perks of being a GM begger? I am curious..I am a GM Begger

You've illustrated part of my point. My favorite memories of the early days on UO was as a struggling scrub running from beasts and PK's... Now, after discovering Excelsior, I am re-living the experience and really enjoying it.
I heard a new comer remark that he had been here only a week and had made 500k in gp.. Quite an accomplishment but I think he is missing a lot.
I think it is good and friendly to gift new comers, but do not give too much, just enough to get on their feet. Like in the real world, give them a job logging or feathering in exchange for a generous gift.
As for a healer who has sworn off gold and killing or stealing, could you survive?
You could heal or work, but only for food..You could tame but never to harm.
It is a different kind of challenge..
Re: The contemplative way of the wandering healer
The beauty of EX is that you can be anything you want. Some days when I become very bored I do some crafting and fill taming bods to pass the time. If you are looking to be a full-time begger I doubt you will go far, as npc's don't give out that much and if you are constantly pestering players most likely you will be ignored or labeled annoying.
For a new player to make 500K is not hard... at all. It really depends of your previous knowledge of the game, read the wiki, be well connected, or just plain lucky. There is a lot of activities here that can net you that much amount of gold. I can make 500K to 1mill a day, but I have to invest the time to earn that much. For instance, if you were only playing a bee farmer... after your beehives are at the 100K population threshold and provided that they are all happy and hard working you can net 1.2 - 2mill a month from selling the honey and beewax.
Like I said, you can be whatever you wanna be in here... and you don't have to slay one single living thing in here to make a living. Have fun and welcome to Excelsior!
