I was under impression that peacemaking works only on mobs that should be "peaced". Cows seemed to be peaceful enough already, so I went to calm down skeletons. They still wanted to kill me, but since I wasn't killing anyone and skill was growing, I camped that spot.

After coming out of jail I stood there for 45 minutes and not a single mob died. I repeat, with my current gear it is impossible to kill a mob without hitting it.
