How many times is too many times?

Post by Franz Ferdinand »

I like to kill monsters while playing UO. When I first started out, a group of us would go out and kill Balrons in Blood over and over, as fast as they could spawn. That is until someone else showed up to do the same and we would happily give it up, but therein lies my question. If no one ever showed up. How long can I stay down in Blood killing Balrons? At what point am I "exploiting". I figured this question not only applies to Balrons and would also continue up the gambit on all fast spawning monsters in game. So if I kill a Peerless and wait for it to respawn and kill it again, what have I done wrong? I have seen nearly every Peerless being done this way. I thought this was par for the shard and just falling into the motto:

"Have fun and let others have fun. Use common sense and respect other members of the community."

And not into a vague exploitation rule that is coupled with programs and macros, making it seem as though exploitation is only possible through one or the other:

4. Programs, macroing, exploiting:
a. Any kind of client or program is allowed to connect to this server, as long as it does not harm the integrity or performance of the server in any way.
b. Macroing allowed, even while you are away from keyboard, except for activities listed in rule 4.c. below.
c. When performing the following activities, you must not be away from keyboard: killing spawn (regular or champions), leveling weapons, fishing, gathering ore/wood/leather/wool/plants. This may not be a final list - the idea is that you should not perform anything that brings a good amount of wealth while AFK.
d. Exploiting the game in any way is prohibited and will be punished by a long term or permanent ban.

I am confused by the possibility that someone can kill a creature too many times in row. I sit in jail awaiting my verdict :(

Wait, you've actually been jailed for this ?

If not, here's my two cents:

Spawning timers are completely up to the staff.

Therefore it's in their hands, not in ours. If it is possible to kill a monster that has alot of gold very fast in a row it's not your fault, BUT everyone should report something that seems really odd.

For example: If the Balron respawn time was like 2 seconds all of a sudden, then it's more then likely that something is wrong with the spawn timers. The way it is now it takes a minute or two for them to respawn, which is fine especially when multiple players are trying to kill them. They respawn faster when they've been left alone for a while, but only the first time, then it returns to normal again.

Now champion spawns are meant to be done in a specific way ... anything else then just fighting monsters to get to the champs feels like exploiting to me, but then again, without a proper macro that does it automaticly ... it seems like an awful way to spend your time in UO ... incredibly dull i'd say.
Signature under construction. Nothing to see here.

"So if I kill a Peerless and wait for it to respawn and kill it again, what have I done wrong?"

Absolutely nothing. When you kill a peerless, you're not obligated to tell anyone that it's down and that it's open for anyone else. However, if you kill it and someone else came by and watched you kill it, he has the right to request the next one. If he wants to help you out with that kill, then he has to ask you to join the current kill. You have to give consent to him for help.

Camping a spawn is not wrong, dominating it and cutting off attending players is.

I was not there and cannot make a 100% certain response to this matter, but I call shenanigans on the claim that you were jailed for killing a spawn twice in a row, while you were there alone and no other player requested the next spawn.

...once again, I highly recommend keeping corrective actions out of the forums.

Can do. I was unaware it was frowned upon.
