let's see if I can put this coherently...Guy A has key B and lock C, guy D has key E and lock F. Guy A sends the chest to guy D empty but with lock C inside, and the chest is unlocked. Guy D puts his secret message and lock F inside, locks it with Lock C, and sends it back. Guy A opens Lock C with key B, swaps messages, puts lock C in the chest, and locks it with lock F. Guy D opens lock F with key E, et cetera ad nauseum. Basically they have to send their own lock with the message.

Edit: after rereading the post, I'm not sure I'm on the right track, the hint doesn't fit in with my plan...

If speed is not an issue, you schedule a third party to go around to the recipient, carrying the proper key. You schedule the "key-holder" to visit the sender a few days AFTER the shipment has left and to arrive at the destination a few days AFTER the package has arrived. The key holder then unlocks the chest and exits before it is opened, returning the key to it's owner.

This can easily be scheduled using any number of tradecraft signaling or message drop techniques.

The chest lid doesnt have a hinge just padlock rings on either end. Agent A receives the chest and unlocks his side with his key. The lid hinges on Agent B's padlock. He sends the chest back to Agent B who unlocks it with his key. The lid hinges on Agent A's padlock. No-one else can get in the chest while its in transit and each Agent has access and their own key to the chest.

No keys can be exchanged.

Well, the original solution is, if the lid was on a hinge:
1. Person A puts the item in the chest and locks it, sends it.
2. Person B recieves the chest, and puts the 2nd lock on the chest. Then sends it back to person A.
3. Person A recieves the double locked chest. Removes his lock. Sends chest back to person B
4. Person B just unlocks his lock and takes the item out.

But kharn's solution is even more universal. So kharn wins :)
I'll post another tomorrow.

What is ...
Reward: 5ED

It's better than the best, it's worse than the worst. Only the very poor have it. The richest people need it. If you eat "it", you will die. What is it?

Congrats, indeed it is. Well this was a simple one :)

Lightbulbs and switches
Reward: 15ED

There's a room with three standard lightbulbs. On the hallway next to the door that leads to the room are three switches. Each switch controls one lightbulb.
You are standing on the hallway infront of the door, the door is closed. You can flip the switches however you'd like, but once you open the door you can't touch the switches anymore. There's no way of looking under/over the door to see whether the light is turned on or not, no way to look thru the keyhole either.

How will you find out which switch controls which lightbulb?

Flip one switch on and wait a minute. Flip it off and flip another switch on. Go into to the room. The switch you just flipped corresponds to the light that's on. Feel the two bulbs that are off. The switch you flipped first corresponds to the hot bulb, while the switch you never flipped corresponds to the room-temperature bulb.

I thought I remembered the answer from a class I took about 25 years or so ago when I was in the Military.

Wasn't sure, but I figured I'd put up what I recalled anyhow (the sad thing is, most days I wouldn't be able to remember what I had for breakfast the day before, except I eat the same thing every day :P But I remember what my wife calls "useless" stuff constantly. hehe)

Sorry for the long delay hehe but here's a new one:

Monastery epidemic
A disease broke out in a monastery. The only symptom of the disease is that you get a green spot on your forehead. The disease isn't contagious, so there's no chance of others getting infected after the first outbreak.
- On one day alone, some of the monks get infected. There are no further infections later.
- There are no mirrors in the monastery, also no chance of looking for example in a pond and seeing whether they have a spot on their forehead.
- The rules of the monastery are very strict, there must not be any sort of communication between the monks. No talking, no winking, no exchange of written messages or no pointing.

All of the monks gather once per day for lunch. At that time, they can look at other monks, however not communicate with them. All of the monks know that the ill ones need to leave the monastery, but the ones that are not infected should stay.

I suppose they have a very good library in there, because somehow they all found a way to get all of the ill monks out, while all the healthy ones remain in the monastery, without any communication. Since it's not contagious, they dont need to leave immediately... even if it takes months.By what logic did they leave?

30ED to whoever finds the answer :)

are you sure there isn't a certain piece of information missing from this puzzle? Did someone visit and tell them there is a disease? how did they know that something is wrong? How did they know that the spot was a disease and they needed to leave? since they can't communicate with each other seems illogical that they would be able to know that something was wrong unless there was a book that says, if you see someone with a green dot in their forehead they have a disease. How many are in the monastery? What color are their shoes? do they have athlete's feet? are they in the northern or southern hemisphere? are any of then partially bald? these are the questions that plague mankind....

I would say that monks are consider people who are attaining enlightenment through their training etc.

Of course reading will be one way to attain enlightenment.

I would say that they communicate by giving the infected monks with a book with a hidden meaning telling them that they are infected and they should leave the place.

As time doesn't matter, they can take their own sweet time to figure out the hidden meaning which the book is telling them.

Hope i have guessed correctly.
