+60 skill ball question

Post by Oberyn »

Hi! I'm more or less new around here, I wanted to ask something regarding the +60 skill ball that comes with the character. I wanted to use it yesterday for my taming, but there only seem to appear some of the skills to rise, not all of them, and I wonder whether i've done something wrong or what. Curiously enough, most of them were A to C, except for item identification I think.

So, what's up with this? Is it normal? Are there just some that you can raise with the ball? Or where are them?

Thanks in advance!

And hi to all!

taming will increase, But I would hold off using the skill ball for awhile.
You can gain in taming really fast by making pet dyes.
Save the skill ball for a skill that you are having a big problem with. I made the mistake of using mine for provo....

Yeah i know i was lucky i didn't use it after reading some stuff around here, but anyway it was weird, because as I said, only like 12 or 15 skills appeared to choose when I double-clicked the ball. Anyway I'll look better as soon as I get home, maybe there was an arrow to scroll it down or something xD

Thanks.

pound for pound the longest time spent training anything on this shard would be spent on removetrap or lockpicking

HOWEVER
lockpicking has an excellent script to get you to 95 and the long part is 95-120 so the 60 skilball doesn't help much

removetrap is of questionable usefullness after a certain point.

with that being said, what to use the skillball on is of questionable importance since all other skills are quite easy to max out

And the original question. There is a button to go to the next page of skills. I thought the same thing that it only showed A-C. I don;t remember the menu, but it is there.

i have not been in every dungeon on this server ...yet...but it seems to me you need to assess what type of character you want to be in end game. had i known when i started..i would have worked my taming up from scratch and used my skill ball on trap or lockpicking...on the other hand, i have found a happy medium in all skills..but if you never plan to open a locked chest..then i would say taming would definitely be sped up using the stone and a 120 powerscroll...but definitely think about it prior to the use of it.

but don't think too hard because the +60 skill is only assistive on 40 removetrap, and 95-120 lockpicking

everything else on the shard is beyond easy to raise by hand

I wasted my skill ball on a skill which is not that hard to raise. I actually thought about scraping the character and starting over. If it was not for the 7 day time frame to delete a new character, I would have. Now I will just have to take the time to raise the skill.

I would think the best skills to use it on are ones which take a lot of resources, not ones which just take time to complete. Taming sounds good, but it does not require any resources. Just the ability to subdue the creature you want to tame at higher levels. Crafting skills take a lot of resources, but waiting to buy a 120 PS to take advantage of the skill ball may take a while. By that time I would already be GM in any of those skills.

So basically it is up to you how you want to spend it. To save time or to save resources. Using it to get to 120 seems the best use no matter what the skill is. And most likely you would not be using all 60 points, because who will be leaving the skill at 60 until they get the scroll?

jradford is pretty spot on. Short term gain for making money and getting up to speed is to use it on taming. That will get you in the world making gold in decent amounts with mules, nobles, imps etc. It's short term gain, long term loss though. You are really going to have to grind some of those other skills like lockpicking and may regret using it at that point. However, your needs are your own. That initial skill grind can be a bit of a slog and this would get you immediate gratification. The lockpicking and other skills that are more difficult to raise have more nuanced use cases though (like treasure hunting) while other crafting skills may cost quite a bit (smithing for example). Ultimately, it's up to you to decide what you want to do (make gold right away, save for a tough skill, or save gold on resources) as each use case is valid. Good luck.

Howdy,

I suggest using a second character for "bootstrapping." Start the second character with 40 taming and use the +60 skill ball immediately. That gives you the use of mules and the ability to make pet shrink potions. Player vendors sell decent mules for as little as 5k gold each and it's not hard to work that up. With a mule team you can farm dungeons effectively and build up gold for your early game expenses: LRC suit, +taming jewelry, pet leashes, house, the various resource keys, flax farm, power scrolls.

Work your main character's taming up the normal way -- jewelry + dyes to a real of 100, +120 power scroll and then go tame lesser hiryus to 120. Save his skill ball for a hard skill. Once he hits 100 you can delete the bootstrapping character and create a new one with a fresh skill ball. Ideally you used your character creation points on two skills which are relatively hard or expensive to move from 30 to 50. Crafting skills I think? Taming (with jewelry available) isn't.

Wil
