For starters, let me just make sure everyone understands I'm not whining, I'm trying to learn from an in game experience to avoid making the same mistake twice (Don't even know if it needs to be said here, but I've had bad experiences on other forums)...
So yesterday I was riding through Malas wild, just exploring. I should say that my account is about 2 weeks old and I haven't played UO since 97-98, so Malas is one of the many things which are new to me. Anyway, I ran into a dread steed which promptly nuked me and killed my mount (mount #1). I rode back on mount #2 and tried to lure the dread away from my corpse -> he breathed -> me and mount #2 both died.
Now, mount #1 + 2 were both bonded and wonderfully happy when I rode out.
After a while, someone came and killed the dread and I recovered mount #1, but left as I was running out of insurance gold in the bank and didn't want to chance dying any more then I had...When I tried to summon mount #2 today, nothing happened and it doesn't register anywhere, so I assume I've lost my 100k mule to some mechanic I don't understand. The wiki didn't help and global chat has been unable to provide an answer...
So what was my mistake..? At which point did I lose mount #2 completely..??

Hi there,
We've all had experiences similar to this
It's part of what exploring can get you! Good to hear that you had your items insured.
So can I just clarify... both pets were bonded. By rescuing pet 1 do you mean you ressed it and rode it out or shrunk or stabled it or something? And then the second one you left as a ghost and logged out? I'm not sure exactly, but I do think that there is a limit to how long a pets ghost will stick around for, probably on the grounds that pets have hunger(happiness) and if they get to the end of that then they go wild. Or if you ressed the pet but did not stable it because you had to run then it will probably have gone wild and would not be retrievable.
Everyone loses all manner of things at some point, but you just learn from it and exceed what you had previously. I'm sure you will too. Good luck out there.

Yes, it would have gone wild after a day or so, even as a ghost.
Sooner if you hadn't fed it recently/if it's happiness was less than "Wonderfully Happy"
New players, and I think you are new enough, have access to a free pet summoning stone in the training room area (iirc), and yes it should summon ghosts.

Awesome, this was exactly what I was looking for...
Yes I left it as a ghost, incorrectly assuming I could summon (for free at the newb champ) and res it the following day (I really didn't run away screaming like a little girl, those were cries of rage to strike fear into the heart of my enemies)...So it probably went wild...Ok thanks a bunch guys...
