Favorite Things About This Shard

1. The great players I have come to meet and play with throughout all these years and I consider them as real friends.
2. Titan Hammer, Bone Crushers, SoT, 4-5 x 58% weps
3. The forums... where else can I get the latest drama?? You guys rock!
4. Dramoor... he makes me green of envy and push me to collect insane amounts of bling bling to get to his level
5. Last but not least the Staff here +V and +Nyx... for the great events you guys have done throughout the years.

I just hit 6 months today, so here's a great time to list my favorite things!

• The Staff: Having played a very large amount of MMOs, and before that MUDs and MUSHes, I can say it's incredibly rare to have staff interact with players as much as Excelsior's staff do. The combination of events, changes other than nerfs, and global chat interactions make this shard what it is.

• The Players: Rinse repeat for the playerbase. I know we've had some recent changes related to drama over spawns. But as I move out into the wider world, I'm shocked at how rare that drama actually is. The attitude displayed by the majority over things like champion spawns and Doom stealables just doesn't occur in other more popular MMOs. Just look at the WoW forums if you don't believe me

• The Features: The number of custom features on this shard is pretty amazing. Even allowing for those features being incorporated from other Run UO shards, it still took a great deal of effort to get them working together cohesively. The OSI implementation of UO has a lot of game design that's focused on keeping players paying month after month, rather than having fun. Excelsior corrects a lot of that. Just the ability to have crafting skills on characters that also do combat is worth the price of admission.

Anyway, I don't mean to start a hugfest. But sometimes it's good to focus on what we have, instead of what we don't have.

This is a really sweet thread Thank you to all who mentioned the staff as part of what you love about our shard, that is exactly the sort of reason we volunteer here.


So, my favorite things about Excelsior are:

- Staffing. As frustrating, stressful, infuriating and godawful as it can be when we're under siege like we have been lately, most of the time it is highly rewarding. Fun. Challenging. Exciting. Interesting. And there's always new things going on. New people to get to know, new things to learn, new events or quests or content or deco to make. Having played UO for so many years as a player, I found that I was a little bored after awhile, and staffing has cured that in a big way and renewed my love for the first MMO I ever played.

- (most of) The players. For the most part, the lot of you are great folks. It makes me happy to see y'all helping each other, or telling jokes, having interesting conversations. Sure there are always a few bad apples, but most everyone who lasts on this shard is a pretty nice person.

- The extensive custom work on this shard. It's unlike any other I've played on and while it's certainly not a perfect system or perfect shard, it's always trying to evolve and improve. The name of the shard is it's own motto, and I like that for so many years there have been staff and players making it the place it is today.
