Brand spanking new, looking for a shard

Post by QMaverick »

My brothers and I played UO back in the day--we stopped around the Third Dawn era (we played 3rd dawn for a year or so), and we are now thinking about starting on a private and free server. :D

After doing some searching and reading, your server looks pretty appealing. I tried this once before and could never find anyone else online to do anything with--which kinda takes the fun out of things.

Aaaanyway, on to my questions:

1.) How many people are typically online during peak times? Any idea?
2.) How does the game-play in Excelsior compare to UO: Third Dawn?
3.) How is the server run? I mean, is it sitting in someone's basement with a back-up HDD, or is it a paid-for game server?

Thanks, and I hope to be playing again soon!

Sounds cool....with 60 people, is it possible to find anyone to help out with things or to help?

Also, is there any way to transport my old Ultima Online character (still on their servers) into this world?

I dont think there is a way to port your char from OSI but getting started at this shard is pretty easy and you can GM skills pretty fast. As for helpful players, this is the place to be and you will find players being pretty helpful.

I suggest you give it a shot and start playing for yourself and also check out the wiki to get an idea of some of the things you are able to do

if you read our forums, and you read our codex and such, you will see we have a lot of very positive things going for us. With no skill cap, you can GM every skill on 1 chara so you don't have to switch back and forth to do things. We are all basically 1 big family. We have guilds, but it is more for just personal enjoyment than for anything else. There are no guild wars or anything like that, it is more for fun rivalry than anything. This shard, as you will see after being here a short time, will be one of (if not the ) friendliest shards around. We have great staff, and more so, we have great players who will help anyone at anytime. I promise you, if you and your friends join us here, you will not be sorry you did.

As for the basement server lol i guess i can comment on that. It's a server at my home but it's not some old machine, we have brand new quite powerful hardware (last upgrade august 08'), we got 3 backup locations! and with the recent donations i'll be further upgrading the weak links. The connection is a 10/10 mbit and can, if needed, be upgraded to a gigabit. Though for now 10/10 is plenty hehe (maybe 20/20 or 50/50 in the near future).

As for the character transfers. Well i wish i could run multiple servers, if so then i'd probably make characters transferable between them, however usually the configuration of each server is different - gold income, artifact drop... so if one could transfer their belongings from a server where "50 mil is kinda rich" to a server where "20 million is mega rich" then this would not be fair.
However transferring between OSI and our shard, that would be possible only if a staffmember came to OSI and copied all of your things. But then that is a whole lot of work.

But as the others say, yea it's a very friendly shard, lots of fun and relaxation. Tech-wise, we have a quite above average number of unique custom features (those you won't find on OSI) so that makes for many extra opportunities in the game.

Sounds good! I downloaded the client last night and might try to log on tonight to see what's what.

So, I take it this differs quite a bit from Third Dawn--no skill cap and what not.

That's interesting--with no skill cap, don't you have ultra-powerful characters walking around that can kill anything in the land with no help? I mean, I could see a GM Tamer/Warrior/Healer with a Nightmare, a dragon, and GM spell casting kill everything in site before it even gets close...

You should know that there are new, more powerful monsters :) and the Mondain's Legacy dungeons here are custom made and they have really powerful monsters.
