MVP

Post by indigowulf »

Im not sure this is the correct forum for this, if not can it be moved please?

What would be neat is, if there was a monthly "MVP" award.

Set up a box where players write thier own name and thier nomination name in a book. You can only nominate 1 person each month. You could not nominate yourself.

End of the month, there could be a 1 week forum poll, with each nominee's name. People vote on MVP for each month.

You could not win 2 consecutive months. Prizes could be randomly awarded, not more than a 100 ED level prize? (or less, discussion plz) Maybe runner up prizes as well, even if you won runner up, you cannot win again next month. Keeps the prizes spread out.

Just a thought.

Feedback/suggestions encouraged.

I'm not particularly keen on this.
Not because it's a particularly bad idea, but because I feel that it is not actually needed.

People who already help others out will continue to do so without reward (apart from heartfelt gratitude from the helped), and without any desire for recognition for it. The ones who actually bother with that stuff are better off not helping since it's not from the heart. Please note that this isn't directed at anyone, it's just a general statement.

The people who already currently are out there helping people with whatever it is they need (whether it's guiding new players, rescuing and resurrecting the recently departed, giving out requested information, or other services) will continue to do so without this award. They don't need this kind of cheapening of their kindness, what good is it knowing who the 'most' helpful person is (and this may not even be accurate with the small voting size)? If one person is voted MVP, it doesn't diminish the deeds of everyone else out there who was contributing to the community, and it's an unnecessary enthroning of a person who should already be unconcerned with and beyond the need for reward or recognition.
What this vote and reward would incite is a ton of people suddenly trying to be helpful just for the sake of the potential reward and/or simply to be MVP. It's far too "carrot on a stick" and won't bring about true change for the better in the hearts of those so incited.
As a player, I would rather people not help me than help me to make themselves look good to the people around them for a shot at a reward. If I was a brand new player, I would not feel happy in the slightest if I found out that I was only helped (or toured, using the existing [tourthankyou system) for the ED/reward.
The current state of things is how it works best. The people who actually care enough to help, will help. Those that don't, won't. There is no "forced" feeling anywhere.

On a somewhat related note it's also going to suck up some manpower that could be far better directed towards more events and more frequent policing of the shard.

Hmm good points all. I just wish there was some way those who we are greatful to could be shown our apreciation in some sort of lasting way.

Drop any reward to a sash with something on it? ("someone wuvs me" or something)

Well as far as [tourthankyou goes, +Rayne's had an idea that everytime you tour you get some points and the status of your helpfullness then gets displayed under your character's name. Perhaps a similar thing could be done so that if you see a person in chat, you could award them "karma" as it's made on some forums, or some helper points. Not sure what those points would be used for then, i suppose they could be just for a nice title.

What does MVP stand for though?

First off i would like to agree on both sides. However though i agree with say the mvp award i agree that having that reward would like it has been said already would encourage others to help out strictly for the reward demeaning others that do it just because they enjoy helping others. I would like to see some kind of encouragement or rewarding for those that do help. I think though that the reward should be in the lines of say compassion like when you escort npcs. we have many virtues there that can be used for rewarding those deserving of it. I recommend something other than compassion as it is already quite easy to raise that compassion lvl and with the other virtues there dormant or not being used regularly it could be of some use or help to those that help. The idea of karma is good idea however there are already many ways to gain karma. Perhaps a title of some sort through a point system similar to what i think Rayne has concocted. I myself enjoy helping others and could use rewards quite well however I enjoy helping without reward and would continue to do so without reward and do not require any of sorts. I have even toured many without the [tourthankyou and set quite a few up with armour weapons pets etc... i believe the [tourthankyou only lasts first few hours and should be extended but really if your there to help them not for the reward but to actually help them it should not matter about the [tourthankyou. Sorry for the lengthy post and hope i could shed some light on possible options to pursue if really desired

This system I'm about to post still suffers a little from the "I'll do it, but only for the reward" syndrome, and also only extends to the issue of experienced players helping out youngs.
It was something OSI designed and never pulled through with.
The concept is quite sound, and it is less subject to abuse than other systems because the helper still has to make a good impression on the helped and stay close to them for extended periods of time. The gain is not monetary but one that cannot be obtained in other ways and applies on top of/after all gear (meaning it won't be overshadowed, at least not until number inflation lowers it's worth, but this should not happen for ages if ever).

Without further ado, the Virtue of Humility.
http://www.uoguide.com/Humility#Virtue

It was never implemented in game, but if it were to be brought to life on a custom shard I think this would be the best balance between meaningful reward given and meaningful newbie help required.

This isn't a feature request or anything, by the way. Just throwing it out there to add more ideas to the pool.
