another broken skill

tracking seems not to work in doom on the Knight guy, it works IF he is not already invisible, if he invis's you might find your self casting reveal on 3722 tiles in that room until you get lucky and click him, (however if you send pets on him they can usually run very close to em giving you a better idea what area to try to reveal,

It is not broken. Tracking is no longer used in the Gauntlet. You may use Reveal to find the monster. If you do not have pets with you, narrowing the location down is still quite simple. There is a way to find the 4 tile area where he is hiding quite easily.
So as not to make it boring by giving out this method, I will let you, or a fellow player figure it out.

I used to just hit him with a Bleed Attack and follow the blood drops...though I do wonder if AoE spells like Volcanic Eruption and Earthquake would hit and reveal him.

I too became quite frustrated the other day till about 5 minutes after I left when the answer hit me and I did the old face palm trick. I am looking forward to my next visit. When you get into habits sometimes the (simple)obvious answer can stare you right in the face and remain hidden.
But this does lead me to a question about tracking here on Excelsior. It seems to me, as a GM tracker, that when I use tracking out in the world, I cannot find anything until I am close enough to see its name anyways on my screen. It works wonders afer you find it so it cannot get away but to "track" it down before hand it is about worthless for me. Am I the only who has noticed that? Am I the only one who would use tracking on the outside?
I fancy myself as a Paladin/Ranger character and I don't think I could track down an army of orcs let alone a wandering enraged goat that might have that lettuce head I need. I would think that a GM tracker should pick up a trail or "scent" at least 1 to 2 screens away or more.
Obviously, this isn't a major issue. It's just something I have noticed and wondered about.

As for the method of finding this Gauntlet monster, I have to say that bleed attack is an excellent idea to add. It was not the one I was hinting to but is a great contribution. Great thinking!
Aye, I would agree with you Cygnus and will consider this adjustment in a future upgrade. It is a skill that, when wandering the globe, outside of off limit areas mind you, could be utilized even if merely for role playing purposes, or possibly a player-lead event.

As Black mentioned in the first post, all I do is say "all kill" and target the shadow knight. When he hits 50% and disappears and warps randomly, the pet(s) attacking him will run at him until they pinpoint his location to within a few tiles and the lead pet
should be standing right in front of the shadow knight. If it isn't, it'll generally move just a little bit more within 30 seconds.
The only issues arise if you leave your pets on guard for this particular creature, when he disappears, the pets will return to your side and your only notification is that very short visual cue that looks like a single white "poof" (which may not necessarily be on-screen if he warps directly up or down since those sides are shorter).
The thing is, tracking is *
supposed* to be usable on hidden or invisible creatures:

I'm really not too fussed though since the above method of finding the shadow knight doesn't even require any effort on the part of the player.

I'm at GM tracking, I use it on the shadow knight all the time, and has always worked 100% of the time for me.

Have you tried it lately? It doesn't show anything if you attempt to track the knight *after* he disappears.

The easiest way to stop players from tracking staff is to make the skill not work on anything hidden.

Last time I did it, was last week.
