How can you be a competent fighter in this shard with all those pets? You see i've been playing UO for a long time in other shards and i must say that Excelsior is really the best of all (really deserves the 1st place) and not only because of staff but all the players are friendly and always willing to help! (and this is really hard to find!) but i became a little frustrated when i tried to build a old fashion fighter/paladin

and im starting to realize that all resumes in strong pets and bows...
I know about the skills and they uses and the ways to make a good character...but if you gonna build a close combat fighter you gonna disapear near the first Mule you find hehuehehehheheeh (i wish i can have they stats cap

)
Again, im not dissin with anyone or the shard, i voted for it and will continue playing because you all make it the best...im just askin (in a weird way) how a fighter can be nearly tough as this animals that i dont like to have hauhahuahuahu
Tks for all hard work!

Well, I'm kinda like you man. Back on OSI and other shards, I rarely used animal taming... so when I first started on here I didn't use it either.
But to answer your question (to the best of my ability), there are some on here who are quite capable w/ out the use of pets. I seen a certain few melee Paragon Ballies, which IMO is whacky

. A lot has to do with the gear you are equipped with, and since there are quite a few AWESOME pieces of gear to be acquired on here, it is very possible to be a "non-tamer" on here.
Now, on another note... many shards have a Skill Cap. On Excelsior there is NO skill cap, which means you can 120/130 every skill! With that in mind, it might explain why many have went to Animal Taming as a primary means of killing MOBs. Also, if time/efficiency is taken into mind, having 5 maxxed Nobles/Mules/Imprisoned Pets do your dirty work frees you up a lot more time and makes killing things faster; thus allowing you to maximize your playtime efficiency.
Sorry went off a bit there. That being said, you don't have to have Animal Taming on here at all. Get yourself a Tome of Nature (ie: Druid Book) and some rocking armor, and youll be quite capable going solo.
Rarr!

Well, to put it quite simply...your not ^_^. There is no way you will ever be as strong as the animals here just because of, like you said, their amazing stat caps. However being a melee fighter is not an impossible thing, it just requires technique, suave, and a little bit of luck ^_-. Good example would be BlaZe, I have been to a few events where he has participated and he is able to go toe to toe with one hit killers. Not 100% what his techniques are (other than what he said one time about having a hotkey for mirror image), but the point is you can do it. Check out the post called...Meleeus Maximus (or something of the sort) it has a few good tips there. Other than that, it is going to take what it took to be a successful non mage PvPer in the old days, technique. For starters, get your Ninjutsu up for Mirror Image. Then go from there ^_^.
Best of luck to you.

Hey, I feel kinda the same way as the author. However i can solo a reg ballie with no specail get up. If you need help let me know. We can fight together. I'm always looking for someone to kill stuffs with.
Off topic, I think too, that instead of makeing more 1 hit kill monsters, we could raise the parry rate and dci on specific mobs. Also maybe to give the tamers a better challange how about includeing whirl wind as a main attack on critters. I feel there is more that could be done to better challange tamers, while giving those who wish to melee there space.

Yea i noticed that hight ninjutsu was a good way to start then i leveled it up to 100, and mde a hotkey for mirror image too

then i took a hanzo bow that is a incredible weapon and will start to level it up, for increase damage on melee and fast hit im starting with poisoning to reach deadly poison uses and raised my defenses all to 70 (theres anyway to raise more? donating?quests?) but still be beaten up by many common (indeed strong) monsters...and when i went with a party try to kill Serado, The Awakened i was just SO beaten up by its minions that gave up
Tks for the topic you mencioned i searched for related topics before post but didnt find

The best thing you can do is get bushido and parry to 120. This gives you a 46% chance to block with a 2 handed weapon. Second best thing to do is max out Defence chance increase to 45%. After that maintain a high swingspeed rate, use mirrior image and use counter attack. Oh and dex, get that bad boy up as high as you can. Face it there will always be monsters that will 1 hit you, but if you can't be hit. Then you win.

When I started out I was useing a dbl axe with 45% mana steal and 40% life steal and other variuous bonouses. I since moved towards a War Hammer cause I find this inflicts a great deal of damage more on a single mob while maintaining an awsome crowd controlling effect. Even if you die. Die knowing you have more class then half these other chisel heads

Thats how i see it.
