Shard permissions?

Post by zeinir »

Hello, because i think +Colibri has all of the copyright here and you should know how crappy OSI is so I am asking you if i can base my shard off of yours, Excelsior shard has been the best one that I have played so far, but there are some things that I would do different on my own shard. I will respect your (or anyother GM's) wishes on the matter. Please get back to me soon.

Might have been better asking through a PM Zeinir, Even if you made a shard based on Excelsior it would never be as great as this place :D might as well pull a chair up and stay here :P

Well it would be funny if I said no :) Basically this shard, like other shards, is made with ideas that derive from OSI, other shards and also other games. If you make your own shard, I don't think anyone will stop you if you take ideas from somewhere else, as long as you don't copy-paste the content. Or if you make it truly identical, I found that people won't like such a shard (if they know of the original), well unless if you make it identical to OSI, since there's people who like to play the game as original as possible. I'm not sure if there even exists an "original idea", seems to me that most or all of ideas derive from somewhere and are then changed, or combined with other ideas to make new ones.

What you also need to consider is the numerous hours of work you will have to put in to get the shard running, it's a hard thing to make a very custom shard even if you have good coding knowledge. And then there's the tons of issues that keep coming up once people are playing on it. But you won't know until you try it. Well it's a great experience actually :)

I have considered the hard work im going to put into it, but i have a few questions for you if you dont mind.

Is there any way to host my shard on a website? or is there a company that will do it? because my internet is running at about 350 kb/s and i dont think thats enough to host a shard...

How do I make it so there is no PVP?

How do i make the teleporter?

What levelable wepon thingy did you use?

Why whenever i try to login using your client (i modded the login.cf) it tells me i have wrong user/pass even though i dont?

Is the above question's answer because you encrypted all of the modded files with your own encryption?

If so, will you give me the decrypted form of it?

By hard long hours that you say you have considered, and depends on your team. It took Excelsior to get online with the stuff they started with about 1 year an half? If you count the founders only, theres 3, adding on to the team that took their roles, came out to like what, 6, 7? And the constant upgrades, etc, just as colibri stated...

And hopefully your not one of the people that believe the world is going to end on 2012, it would be a waste of your time rofl...

ps. i am not one of those ppl that believe in that bogus stuff 8)

About your bandwidth, well what counts is the upload. This shard used to be on a 128 kbps upload and it seemed all fine, and we were also on a 512 kbps upload with i think 20 players + some teamspeak, though i think it was laggy at times. You can also rent a server, there's lots of companies that provide that service.

As for the other questions, i can't help you any further since after you solve these 10 problems, 10 more will come. And i don't have the time to fix problems on other shards, this one is already a handful :)

Do you know the C# language zeinir? Because unless your going to pay someone it will be very hard to get someone who knows what they are doing if not..

As Colibri will tell you it takes time to implement something then once it's in it could cause other things to go wrong, then you need a good understanding of why, when, and how to get around them problems.

There are a lot off companies out there that host servers just have to google it, there might be problems from time to time as not everything in this world is perfect, like down time on the server side if somethying goes wrong.

Normally when you first start your shard it will ask you to make an 'Administrator's Account Y/N' which will make you admin after typing in your details, Then go from there, Have a read up on the RunUO website would prob be best thing for you, And also there is a lot of people to help, Where as here Colibri is only one person :) amke may take time to reply for you.

Just my imput I hope it helps.
