Gargoyle Knife and Axepick

Could some veteran tell me how to survive by using the gargoyle knife/axepick?
1. I like to call up the element when using the gargoyle knight/axepick because I want to get more valuable leather/ore.
2. The element is really really strong and my character will die immediately. Hence, no time to reaction or run away.
3. In fact, my character had 116 hits point, all 75 resistance.
4. Someone tell to use Mirror Reflection. Does it help?
5. I also had a pet (hit point 8xx) to guard me but it does not help.
Anyone can give me some hints are really appreciated.

I've had good luck with this, but I have 120 ninjitsu. The simplest way is probably to partner with someone, take turns, and res each other.

Tip: use the druid spell (book/scroll) fertile ground it will res you if you step on it.
Tip: at lord sacrifice your fame to a liche and self resurrect self.
Tip: do it in mook town near an ankh.

i have about 410 hps and it knocks me down (plat ele) to about 20 hps. so yeah hits hard.

Its actually mirror image from NInjutsu skill, but you should definitely have 120 in that skill before you attempt to use that solely for surviving. Tael and anarchy's suggestions are all very good and make hunting plat elementals much easier.
