So far magic seems very week vs physical combat
Also the mobs seem to have high regen rates.
Am I missing something?

No, pretty much spot on (excluding certain druid spells). Basically equipment/gear here can make your character into a tank with little need of any spells outside of +dmg/+hit buffs. And idk if the regen rates are standard but they seemed really rapid to me coming from a Renaissance-era server. Once you're a tank it's a non-issue though.

You can always play a mage for fun though, I do. I get a kick out of being extremely handicapped. But for giggles, the other day my friend and I were talkin' digits and it basically came to this. In the time it takes me to land one chain lightning, full faster casting, he's slung 6 arrows. My spell does 250-280 a hit, but each of his arrows does the same. So he's dropping 1800 in the time it takes me to drop <300. Haha
Now granted this guy's fully relayered and I'm not, maybe with 10 20% SDI mods I'll hit harder... but I'm thinkin it'll never be up that high. Also as a mage I miss out on the instant reheal dex game too, which is pretty critical for the tougher areas. There are some places I simply cannot go, unless I want to be an ooOOOOooOoO cheerleader.

I would RP a magic user IF they enabled Spellweaving. Wildfire is such an awesome AOE spell, especially if you had 5 or more in your arcane circle.

There's been talk for awhile of the GMs making magery viable. Of course there's more involved than just making a super item or something that can't be exploited. +Colibri has been doing a serious amount of reworking on the shard lately that we don't see, but I'm sure it will make it easier for there to be items available that will actually make it worthwhile to use for more than mark, recall and teleport.

Funny you said that SOL, because that pretty much defines how I've always played UO. I've always intentionally gimped myself and done things the hard way in this game. I find a play style I like and stick with it, and it's usually a crappy one lol. But I do this for fun and relaxation, so it doesn't matter if I'm still toting five mules around with me long after I've spent enough gold on deco to buy 220 dex gear three times over - I'm enjoying myself.
