Spring quest borked?

I know you have to steal the seeds, buckets etc, but how do you obtain rabbit, squirrell, and deer parts. I tried to steal them after I killed them. No luck. Can't seem to snoop the. What gives?

Items on corpses aren't able to be stolen. You kill the mob, pick up the item, then collect it into the book. I've verified this is working.
