Donation madness

Just browsed the donation site and now I'm a bit puzzled, what I'd have to donate to get certain rewards.
These things actually contributed to that confusion:
"One Excelsior Dollar equals 0.10 USD (10 cents), one USD equals 10 Excelsior Dollars. "

"Note: The donation amount is in EUR currency, which is different than the USD currency (used to calculate the amount of Excelsior Dollars you recieve as your reward). If you are used to calculating in USD, enter the amount below and click "Convert" to display how much EUR you need to donate in order to get the right amount of Excelsior Dollars."

Plus the fact, that the paypal donation website shows € as currency, too.
So now what? Do I donate 50 US$ (roughly 32 € at the moment) to get 500 ED, or do I donate 50€?

Ok:

(1) Excelsior Dollar = $.10 USD.

So the ratio between Excelsior Dollars and USD is 10/1.

Where the comes in is simply just the currency that Colibri recieves. So if you send $50 he will roughly recieve 32€ as you said.

If Paypal is showing as the currency it will be sending, then you would fill in the blank with 32€ (if you are donating $50.00 USD).

For people that use as their currency, they will need to check the conversion rate to make sure they send in enough to = USD standards for the Donation System.

So, to summarize:

1.) Excelsior Dollars are relatable to USD.

2.) USD is converted to to show the amount Colibri recieves.

3.) Paypal may ask for the amount, but will withdraw the USD equivilent from your account.

4.) If you normally use then simply use a converter to tell you how much Excelsior Dollars cost.

______________________________________________________________________

*Note*Right now it is approximately like this: 1€ = 1.6 USD = 16 Excelsior Dollars.
______________________________________________________________________

So, this is how the Donation System would appear if we were looking at it from an € perspective.

Conversion Chart Example as of May, 2008

3.3€ ....... $5.00 USD ........ 50 Excelsior Dollars
6.5€ ....... $10.00 USD ...... 100 Excelsior Dollars
13€ ........ $20.00 USD ...... 200 Excelsior Dollars
19.3€ ..... $30.00 USD ...... 300 Excelsior Dollars
26€ ........ $40.00 USD ...... 400 Excelsior Dollars
32.2€ ..... $50.00 USD ...... 500 Excelsior Dollars
39€ ........ $60.00 USD ...... 600 Excelsior Dollars
77.3€ ..... $120.00 USD .... 1200 Excelsior Dollars

I hope this will help you a little bit.

Ahhh, thank you, that shed some light on the matter.
May I ask why it was decided to base the rewards on US$, not on Euros? Just out of curiousity.

I suggest you use google to get the latest conversion rate.

For example:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=sl&q=20+usd+in+eur

In case you donate a few cents too little, I still give the full reward. And if you donate a few cents too much, I will give the extra to you in the form for Excelsior Dollars. Which you can either keep for another time, or sell to get some gold.

As for why the USD and EUR mixup, let me explain a little. My account on paypal is in EUR, which means that if someone donates in USD, i first get charged the transaction fee, and when i want to withdraw the money, it charges the conversion fee. And with the falling dollar, there's not much left hehe.

I actually plan on converting ED to be one euro cent. But for now that's just an idea. But with the falling dollar, 500ED donation is worth less, actually alot less than when we started. And since the EUR is more stable, at least for the last couple of years, it would be better if it's fixed to the EUR currency. But you never know what the next president (whoever he or she may be) will bring so maybe in 4 years, 100ED will be approx 10€ :) Well, this is actually alot of speculation, and donations to the shard arent some big amounts of money that would need expert economists to handle :)

And just an interesting fact. When we first started in february 2006, i was deciding whether the druid book will be 12$ or 10€ (that was about the same). Together with the early players and staff we've decided to go with 10$. Now that the druid book is 200ED (20$), that's just about 13€.

It has more to do with keeping the interest rates really low.
