New Player - Hardest Skills to Raise on Excelsior ?

Post by Flight »

Hi Folks,

Very excited to have found this server today after trying one previous PvP shard (PvP not my thing at all :) ). So firstly thank you to all the devs and admins who have put so much work into it.

1. I'm wondering which are the hardest skills to raise here to help in deciding where to put my 100 starting skill points. After reading the wiki and searching the forums it's clear Animal Taming should be one to set at 50.

I'd like to try fishing and treasure hunting for the first time in the near future so perhaps lock picking to 49 and something like Magery with a point into it to get starter reags etc ?

2. I've read on the forums here that a registery change for Razor needs to be used to allow use of UOAssist. I don't know Razor at all and have played a little with UOSteam. Will UOSteam work with UOAssist and does it need a registry addition the way Razor does ?

Any and all advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Lockpicking is way too easy to raise from 0-95 to spend skill points on.

Lockpicking is easy to raise to 95 but not so easy from 95 to 120. Since skill raising is significantly different from OSI, I suggest holding on to your +60 skill ball and see. I held on to mine for 2 years and used it on poisoning from 60 - 120. Probably not the best decision but oh well.

Welcome to the shard.

Hey there. You'll like it here, a lot of fun. Lot of customs. Good people.

Skills are easy to raise here and there's no skill cap. There are even training areas that you can raise skills AFK. I've been here over a year and still have not used my skill ball because I plan on using that for crafting since that gets really expensive to raise. If I could do it again, I probably would put 50 points into two expensive crafting areas that you forsee yourself using. There is also an AFK lock picking script that will take you up to 95 so I would not put points there.

Just to clarify. Anything for profit cannot be done AFK, not everything is raised easily, and there is a lot of challenging stuff to do on this shard.

Animal taming is important but can actually be raised through crafting. Check out the training room where you can raise stuff like archery with a training dirk. Make sure to check out how to be awesome guide that was just bumped up in the thread and also the 220 dex god mode post. Basically get a few GM's skills under your belt and start having fun. This place is great

First, think in terms of two characters: your "main" character which you'll optimize for the long term and your "bootstrapping" character which you'll optimize for building up cash and such in the next couple of weeks.

For your main character, go for the expensive skills like blacksmithy and and tinkering. But then put your main character aside and bring in a bootstrapper.

For the bootstrapper, put 40 in animal taming, 50 in veterinary and the remaining 10 in whatever. Start with Int 50 and lock it immediately so that you'll work up to 125 in str and dex. Then use the skill ball in your bank box to raise taming to 100.

Head for the young player donation chests and pick out four decently overpowered animals (and some arms and armor). Get some bandages to heal your animals and head for a dungeon with no poisoners (you can't cure poison with veterinary until 60). Despise is a decent choice if you picked your animals well.

You just jumped about two weeks ahead of everybody else who starts.

Well, sort of. You should still buy up skills like healing and spend some time in the training room working basic combat skills up to 75 and working your dex up to 125 (tip: fencing raises dex 1 point every 15 minutes or so as long as your fencing skill is under 100). And there's lots more to learn (read the wiki about skill gains).

Feed your animals right away so that if they're still alive in a week you can feed them again and bond them. Bonding means that if they get killed, their ghosts will follow you to a healer where they can be resurrected. Don't burn your free animal bonding scroll in your bank box yet. Save it for your first high-power (near max) mule.

If I had to start over, this is how I'd do it.

In addition, the wiki found on uoex.net has a lot of useful information.

Your next few weeks will be working towards the 215-220 dex level. There is an exhaustive guide on the wiki. Along the way you will find ways to make gold through either the rat quest, bee hives, getting your first set of mules and doing champs, tram dungeons, etc. etc. etc. Your learning curve will be exponential your first few days on the shard. Once you hit 21 days, you are eligible for the mistvale quests, which give you a decent mid level wep and gear.
