Advice from some computer experts please

Post by Golden Temptress »

 Well I blush as I ask this, I confess I am not expert in the runnings/settings on computers so I humbly ask for some advice please :geek:

After getting my lovely new laptop I only discovered all my f1 - f12 keys serve funtions such as wifi, brightness, airplane mode etc... ect...

Now what I would like to know is how do I disable these funtions being used on my f1 - f12 keys so I can set these up as my game keys

Many thanks

I had the same problem with my Toshiba laptop. I only did a quick search that came up with a fix for HP laptops read up on here.

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02035108

another description here.

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Other-Note ... d-p/532607

However if you don't happen to have a HP that might not help. I know for my Toshiba I had to go to my little windows tiles menu area (I hate tiles...) and after some extensive digging around found the setting under an options menu that was buried under other menus that allowed me to just toggle having to hold down or not hold down the new little FN key between CTRL and ALT.

I would suggest Googling your brand of PC with the words "Function key toggle" and see what comes up. I doubt you will have to be specific about which model PC you have but you may need to specify what version of windows you have to get the results you need.

I beat my head against the wall for quite a while before I figured this one out myself. To quote Wayne Cambell and Garth Algar "we fear change" :lool:

I hope that helps you some, if not maybe a real expert will show up and be able to help. I'm just an ad-hoc trial and error type computer guy.

Try doing this, if it doesn't work I'm not sure where else to look.

boot into the bios using F10 key on startup

in the bios screen select the option system configuration.

under system configuration you will find an option that looks like action mode keys or something like that and make it enabled or disabled depending on its current setting then save the changes and then exit the bios screen.

You need to read http://packard-bell-uk.custhelp.com/app ... 2254/kw/fn and do the opposite.
Also note that to enter BIOS F2 key must be pressed when computer starts booting.

Unfortunately none of that seemed to work, I rung the helpline for the company I got my laptop from and all they said was all new computers have f1 - f12 keys used to computer funtions however he said on most games there should be key mapping hmmmm... have no idea how to use that, any ideas? :?:

Iltar and others are correct. You essentially have two options:

1. A third party program to override/set your F keys to whatever you desire
2. Your system likely came with an option in BIOS for "F Lock" or "Invert F" option under keyboard settings. You'll need to access this by pressing one of the F keys (usually F2 or F12) repeatedly during a restart of your laptop.

Maybe take some photos or something of your BIOS screen so we can take a look at it to try and guide you. Just a thought. Good luck.

Ok guys, I appreciate the advice, looks like it may be a problem on my laptop as I cannot access the BIOS, I will tinker with some of those options tomorrow :geek: as my eyes hurt now today from looking at my computer :)

I took all the advice above and tried it out until my head hurt  and because its windows 10 and a packard bell its very hard to overide this, then the last peice of advice which I think was from your good self "1. A third party program to override/set your F keys to whatever you desire" I took to my lovely local computer repair guys who installed the overiding program for did this for £5 as I didn't trust myself to find the right program :D

And yet again thankyou all for your trouble and I hope this post can help others too
