Young / New player auction

Hello Excelsorians!

We have been throwing around some ideas to host an auction specifically for newer players to the shard, and we're trying to come up with item ideas that would be useful to them, but expensive enough to be considered an auction item.

We were thinking of some of the less popular deco items, high use tools etc. I personally wouldn't want anything too disruptive to the normal economy (bundles of power scrolls), etc. Anyway, we would like your opinions on some things to offer. This auction would likely be restricted to under 60 or 120 days, so most player won't have millions of gold.

Also, there is a high probability that all these items would be account bound to the new players account. This is to ensure rich players don't just give a newbie a bunch of gold to buy up stuff to re-sell for later.

Please comment constructively below. Thank you.

1. account bound item bless deed like the ones we got for Christmas last year

2. account bound high use pet leash that has no skill minimum

3. a level 20 parrot

4. maybe a nice account bound cloak/weapon that isn't as good as mistvale

5. account bound appearance change deed {if that's even possible}

young player auction is a great idea and ill be there to watch even if I cant bid

Agreed this is a great idea +R

If it is possible to make items only usable by players under a certain age that would work too as it would create some tradeable/saleable items for players in that age group... so account bound in that case may not be necessary.

100% LRC item account bound, not a full suit..
+5 skill essences account bound, say stealing, lock picking, cartography, the harder ones to raise over 95/100
A medium sized house deed
A trades toolkit with say 2000 use items, shovel, hatchet, scribes pen, sewing kit, etc etc
Taming skill raising kit, 500 dyes, 200 bottles, 1k use brush for example

Think its a great idea. See so many new players snap at the start of a grand auction and walk out, because of the prices.

How about:

A Blessed pair of Scissors
An assortment of BODS
A decent Pet for fighting
An 0 Account age Mount
A mid Range weapon
A new style appearance item
Oaks Champ Skull
Greater Headband of Power
An Elysium ticket (for batch one entry)

And a Cake for everyone on the shard while the first newbie auction happens (had to try :dance )

Deco is interesting to players with lots of gold. If you offer common deco, few new players will be interested. If you offer rare deco, expect a few younger players to act as proxy bidders for older players with gold, crowding out any genuine younger players.

Blessed versions of commonly needed items would be useful to new players without disrupting any player vendors. Scissors. Skinning knife. Caster's keys. Gem pouch. Nice to have blessed versions but not so nice that it'll induce proxy bidding by older players.

180 day versions of the young player katana, bow and helmet. Useful while still young. Sellable to newer new players once they age out.

It's an amazing skill you have Wil, as a mind reader that is, to be able to know that "few" new players would be interested in something that hasn't even been determined what it would be yet!

If I offered 'rare' deco, as i said there was a high probability of it being account bound. Perhaps you missed that part.
If a rich player wants to give their money away, there's nothing I can do to stop it. But they wouldn't be getting anything in return.

I am liking the idea of blessed common items, and things like that.

Dude, that was uncalled for. You asked for ideas, opinions and suggestions as to what would or wouldn't make good items for a new player auction. It is my -opinion- that auctioning account-bound items to newish players is begging for hurt feelings. They may not have fully grasped the implications and probably only have enough gold for one big item. Especially deco.

Besides, account-bound deco? Seriously?

You asked, I answered. I really wasn't trying to pee in your cereal.

Yes, I asked for ideas and suggestions for items to use in a young player auction. Not for things that would not work. Your opinion on whether or not they will be popular, or if new players will like them or dislike them is irrelevant, and could have been omitted entirely.

You do have a valid concern with the implications and gold for perhaps one big item. However, I would say to that, why are they at an auction then?

You have a knack of posting negative, or otherwise passive aggressively snark to almost any staff related post I have seen for nearly as long as you have been here on Excelsior. Excuse me for giving some back.

At every single auction I have held I have seen multiple newer/younger players in attendance drool over the deco, even the ones that the older players thought was 'junk', and remark that they wish they could get that stuff. So, I am not sure where this "the newer players won't be interested in deco" thing comes from. Many of our players end up here in hopes of building their dream homes, saying that deco is irrelevant except to the older/richer is just silly.

Also, nowhere in +R's original post did he ask for what would be "bad" ideas. He asked only for what people thought would be good items.

Anyway, so far I've liked almost all of the suggestions - even the special commemorative cake  - keep the ideas rolling, we'll need quite a few to put in rotation if these auctions are to be held on a similar schedule as grand auctions. :)

Asking folks to provide a sounding board for your ideas is smart. Getting upset with the feedback is not.

Then the opinion I offered about new players' interest in deco common enough to not create friction with older players was mistaken. And your offer of this insight into prior auctions is an appropriate and helpful response. Thank you.

Wil

Perhaps not permanently account bound, but on a timer, for like 180 days or something. (Similar to a relayer) By then they wont be young anymore, so it doesn't matter what they do with it. Also I'm hoping its open to a little more than just 120 days. Maybe 180 days and under? I believe thats where the Inbetweenie status starts.

I like this idea :)

As for account age we'd probably go with 180 days, it's a wider audience without including too many Richie Rich types who should instead be at a regular grand auction

As for items, maybe a 0 slot ethy any age
High use enchanted pet leash, or an uber high use regular pet leash, ( or both) no skill limit
bonus pet slot deed
deco, of course :)
placed houses, space,or mountain ones, but it doesn't matter, its just nice for the newer folks to get a house( if not a mountian or star house, perhaps even a connected 18x18 spot
max stat scroll: +25 should be fine (newbieish still)
No arrow deed
LRC deed, same as any other deed, but it adds 100% LRC to the targeted item, (item must be equippable)
Golden Skull that doesn't get consumed on use (no idea if that's even doable)
Enchanted Runebook
Anything off of Trinsic raffle tables (with the exception of the 30 day raffle) including food bucket for pets

A lot of my ideas are pet themed as pets are an important staple of the newbie diet.
