The thing is:

Even if you sell them and someone else breeds them, that is what they choose to do with their purchased property.. so, if you feel cheated on people buying the pets (which then become their property), then raise the price of your pets. Or, only sell ones with 0 breeds left.. it is very easy to get a pet down to 0 breeds, especially after lots of breeding. I have probably 50 mules with 0 breeds in containers at my house.

I mean, I am not intentionally trying to butt heads with you on this, but I just totally don't agree that it is a bug or exploit, being here for so long and all. (no offense to you personally though)

The way to make "changes" is not interrupt what has been in motion for atleast 2 years.. the way to make changes is through the economy or through tactical breeding for selling (yes, again the word i love).

You can either a.) raise the price on the pets you sell or my preferred choice b.) sell pets that are down to 0 breeds, or even c.) sell better tactically bred animals yourself, then there is nothing to gain from buying yours to breed more. To me, it is just that simple..

Anyhoo, again, nothing personal, I have just been here for quite some time and do not see a need to change something that has since never been an issue. There are more realistic ways to make changes.

Since the subject is on "maxed pets". could you please explain and by all means teach us how you got to maxed pets in a short amount of time?
you are talking about one single breed. of which it takes tons to finally reach 1 maxed one.
And of course this is part of the fun but don't make it sound like its all done overnight.

There really isn't a reason to seem so nasty in your post. I don't have a maxed Cu, though I do have high Ozzies that were given as gifts. I was simply saying that it take a little leveling of a pet and then the few seconds to press the mate button. My comment was toward Digger, who made it seem like it would take hours and hours and he would have to live online if he wanted to breed, which isn't the case. I didn't mention a thing about how long it would take to get a maxed out pet.

I dont want to butt heads either, i dont really think we are, just Debating the issue really.

To Be perfectly honest with you, I really dont feel "cheated" so to say, Im more worried of the end result of what could happen with so many pets being able to be pushed into the market or more past the market and the shard in general. I can mass produce off my lines and resell at 2999 all day long which is basicly all they are worth in this current economy since anyone can reproduce the line and even better off of a simple purchase, the only combatant against that is to just dump them all at a ridiculously low price to essentially recoup my cost factor of breeding for 3 months , I cant raise my prices as you suggest because person B bought my pets and reproduced the line for cheaper than i raised the line, so he can resell at a cheaper rate than i can, so .. basicly im at a spot where all i can do is .. recoup some costs.

Whats that do to the shard in general, well it allows New players to have Massive pets at almost no cost which means little to no up front play time to get the pet, thus they can use the pet to go out and earn a small fortune in just a few days. Whats that mean? it means that a new player now has everything they ever need/want from the game in a very very short time frame, thus the life expetency of that player or how long they stay on the shard is cut exponetially.

Im fine with the system if its fine for the shard, I question though.. is it the best thing for the shard?

In my years of UO ive seen them come and go, but the thing that remains constant is that while they are here they work for what they get and the ones that work the hardest for what they get seem to stay the longest and cherish what they earn. Those that get everything handed to them and find the game too easy seem to walk away rather quickly.

If you and Coli feel that its best for the shard , and best for players in general, than im perfectly fine with it.

I just wanted everyone to know what the bottom line was so they or you could make an informed decision for whats best for the shard , not just for your individual situation.

Also, if change means that people quit, then dont change it, if everyone likes the idea of maxed pets costing 3k or 5k then by all means dont change anything. I am only wanting to see the shard thrive , only way to have it thrive is with players, as long as we have the players then its a win win all the way around. vice versa if people are only staying for 3 months then saying.. im bored nothing to hunt, no challenges .. cause they are running with maxed pets at cheap prices.. then we have to step back and ask ourselves, did we do the right thing. cause 3 months then out will not build a shard very fast if at all.

Maxed pets.

Post by Highroller »

Yes I bought a pet from you Ka'met that had high hitpoints and bred to it and avoided several generations of breeding. I am relatively close to maxing out Swamp Dragons and Giant Scorpions that I did NOT buy from you. I have NOT flooded the market. I have sold a few sterile pets, none of which are maxed out. If you can sell maxed pets for 2999 or 3999 whatever you listed by all means go ahead. I won't be selling any maxed armored ostards for less than it took to turn in the deed. I'll keep them for my own use and my guild mates first. When I get Swamp Dragons and Giant Scorpions maxed if you still want I will GIVE you some.

Hmm, well i guess one other alternative is, not to sell pets unless they are maxed, or unless they have 0 breeds.

I mean, if you get such a small amount as you mentioned for your pets, I guess that if it's not economical don't worry about it, unless you just want to help the community.

But yeah, those other 2 points.. sell pets that are already maxed or at 0 breeds and problem is solved.

And if pets are strong and it is the average that most people will have them, then that's good. They will be able to survive Bedlam

That's another thing, just b/c one has pets doesn't mean the game is a walk in the park.. I have seen many people with pets that just honestly don't know how to use them properly, whether healing properly, or controlling in general. So just b/c one has pets doesn't mean it's going to all be easy as pie.

In fact, I know people who don't even like having pets at all, and would rather seek out to kill and destroy by other means. So, in this situation, and from seeing other shards, I think we are very balanced...

I mean, I have seen shards where everything was a disappointment b/c it was just too depressing to even attempt anything b/c your pets were so useless and armor and weapons and magery skill just didnt cut it, and it was miserable.

And then of course, there is the issue of.. why should it be an elite thing to have good pets? I mean, in that case, a handful of people would be able to do everything and have the most monopoly, whereas those who didnt have good pets would be "lower class" which is not promoting equal opportunity...(I mean of course people that want pets, not those who are avid mages or necros only, or ones who have developed a skill for weaponry alone)

So, i don't even see a problem with everyone on the shard having a good pet or set of good pets if they want it. I mean, everyone has to keep up... I can see like, artifacts being legitimate rarity, b/c that is how they are intended, but making good pets, or buying good pets should not be something that is withheld from certain people when that is how they prefer to function in the game.

Colibri and Rayne and whoever else seem to be upping things and surprising us, and pets are not getting any better; they have a cap... so, it's not like one day pets will take over the world b/c they dont stop growing, lol.

Anyhoo, that's my thoughts.. Everyone deserves an equal chance in game and this includes having some good pets if they want. And if people want to sell them b/c they enjoy breeding lots of pets, then that's great! Gives some people a break from breeding, which is nice if they dont want to do that. And again, this doesnt insure ones safety, prosperity, etc b/c there is skill involved when handling pets.

Oh yeah, and did i mention the surviving Bedlam part

if we shut down down-breeding, i will never have maxed piggies or sheep :(

now, puting alimit on how far you can breed 'down' would not eliminate that. perhaps 2-3 gens ?

No offense taken. But unless I misread it you were saying I was flooding the market and I am not. And even without the jumpstart I got off your ostard, I could have gotten there.

Have a nice day.

Col maybe you could sell a tool to make targeted pets sterile. Make a lot of our pets safer to sell. :o)

Hehe actually the pet nooderer isnt a bad idea.

Official update:
I've found the problematic thing in the system. All the time i've been trying to make pets harder to breed, but the system for that is already in.
I will restart tomorrow with the changes that will balance the thing alot, and pretty much do all of the things written in points 1-3, but it isnt a new feature.

I've disabled all breeders. They will come back after the system is fixed, most probably tomorrow.

(The breeders are on a syndicate picnic in a holiday resort near Trinsic.)

Yeah I was trying not to say anything about it but I was wondering the same thing. not much use for polls this way.

I think you seen in my posts that Im Completely for change, But ill be the first to back away if the polls (majority vote) is a landslide against it. I would rather see the change, but i dont think its right to hold a poll to see what the community wants then go against the community anyway

just my opinion anyway.

None of the 3 changes suggested here will be added.

After discussing things yesterday, I've found that ostards hardly ever fail breeding - which is not the full functionality of the system. If you try to max a dragon, when you approach it's limits, they get very hard to breed (fails about 75% of the time).
So, altho you cant get to 1000 str with ozzies, their fail rate is the same as if you were breeding a 250 str dragon - very slim. And i will correct that.

Also as i've written, pets wont be able to go past gen10 (or whichever generation it is that you othervise can't breed if you initiate the breeding with the higher generation animal). This will result in a much larger number of sterile pets.

And i'll probably also add the pet noodering deed.
