I have to say I like it. It looks good on the page, and often times if I'm doing something where I have a lot of spam it goes off my page instantly and flies out of my journal before I can check what was said. The front page lets me glimpse back and see what I missed.
As far as privacy goes, it is public chat after all. If you're saying something you say it to the entire server anyway so it's not like you didn't intend it to be read by everyone in the first place.
All in all, I think it's a unique feature compared to 99% of shards out there, and it's functional.
