Experience / Leveling
Experience / Leveling
Just got an idea, it wouldnt be very hard to implement and might bring some diversity to the shard.
The basic idea is, same way as you get tokens, same way you would get experience (it would be based on the token system so it wouldnt be that very hard to make).
Once you reach certain amount of experience, your level increases, and then again, more exp is needed for each level (you probably know all about how this works).
After you reach certain levels, you could start wearing special equpment or control certain custom monsters.
For example, to wear a platinum thingy you would need to be level 10. for a bronze it's level 5.
After you reach certain level, you would choose what class you wish to be. You could become a warrior at level 30, archer at level 40 and mage at level 50. If you would become a warrior, you would be able to have 175 str, but only 75 int. about the same with mage/archer... this would come in a few months later (slowly integrating and adding functionality).
No promises on when this can be done, the exp-leveling can be fast but class selection and the special armors dealy could take some time.
We could do that at the very beginning, but you know building a shard from 0 is quite a job, you need to consider a gazilion things if you try to do something new, so for now we got a standard shard that is going to get customized over time.

I guess that this would mean losing the noskillcap then?
I don't think you would be able to run chars with the EXP setup like you have mentioned if you DON'T put a skill cap in.
But if you do put in lots of uniques for class and skill set then that would be fine (People wopuld start using different chars for different jobs)
I vote yes......But for what its worth I don't like losing the noskillcap

more info
I need a bit more clearifcation before i vote... I mean... does that mean once you chose you calss... all other options are dead to you? if i choose warrior, that i can't cast magic like i can now? not sure that the people who have been playing UO for a long time would want to lose the ability to have a one chara that can do everything.... I may be wrong... but... if you are talking about having a system sorta based on .. say... the Dungeons and Dragons system... if you are a mage, them you have a pretty crappy hit points and are a major wuss until you get high lvl... so... give me a bit more info before i say ya or na....
the no-skillcap would stay, only thing that you would get special is the uber options, and some drawbacks. Right now i have 5 classes in mind (one for each character slot):
- warrior
- archer
- mage
- tamer
- crafter.
Now, a crafter is lets say easyest of all, and you could choose to become one at level 15. A warrior is a bit more advanced, that option would come at 25 for say... mage is 35 and tamer is 55 (most powerful).
For crafters, for example you would get certain new options:
you would be able to use up to 130 crafting powerscrolls - really rare drop on MOA.
For warriors:
up to 130 all fighting powerscrolls, but your pets would have a 50% chance of not obeying you, or would deal less damage
for mages:
ability to use up to 130 magery, evalint, necromancy, meditation scrolls, and you would be able to have up to 175 int(but only 75 str.).
Archers would get a +2 range bonus, up to 175 dex and 130-150 archery.
If you ahve already picked your class, and you would not be a mage, your magery skill would be effectionally less (if you are 120 it would work like you have 100).
If you would not be a warrior you wouldnt be able to equip any quipment that is made from blaze-platinum ore.
BODs will give experience too. same with all crafting.
Not sure about the actual value of maximum powerscrolls, and all the configuration, it would have to be set so it's all balanced, and there shouldnt be many restrictions. I'll have to listen to alot of your ideas to compile this in the favor of having classes equal.
If one wouldnt like to assign themselves a class, then well they can just be a regular player with no skillcap. If you however do pick a class, you can still legendary all skills, but some things will work better and some worse for you.
I think it's a good idea because right now, everyone just uses pets to kill things, stands by and claims the corpses. but there's alot more this game can offer

In a general sense I like the idea, and I have come up with a few ideas
Feel free to ignore as you please
Once you pick your class you get extra bits. Archers get a bonus to SSI with a bow, but would have a penalty with a sword or mace (But not with a lighter weapon).
Mages would require less regs?
Have an inherant bonus to spell damage
Worriors would have increased SSI with ALL Melee weapons but would only have access to certain pets.
Crafters would have access to NEW things to craft (This would keep the crafters in the need as only they could make them)
Super powerful crafters would have a small chance to enhance a weapon even without a runic tool....Or using a copper runic tool would produce the effect of the next quality up
Crafters wiould be rubbish with weapons and can only use spells up to circle 5, And only have access to certain pets
Once you get to a certain EXP level you would AUTOMATICALLY get a bonus to skills (This would HAVE to be very high)
So a GM whatever would get a +5 bonus to certain skills at lvl 50
And a +10 at 70
(Ok the numbers mean little but you get what I mean)
Mages can choose a low level spell that they can cast FOR FREE and has extra damage. This spell would need to be a low level spell to stop imbalance issues.....So spells like cure or harm or fireball
Tamers would be rubbish with melee weaps and take a modifier to archery
(For instance Elves are often pictured as both tamers and archers)
Not sure if any of these would be possible at all.
They are just thoughts and ideas

yep, thats actually just what i had in mind, except with the animals - everyone would have ability to use animals we currently have in game. Only some special ones would be off limits totally to non-tamers, all other pets would either do less damage, get more damage or not listen to the owner at times.
othervise, yep thats the plan, just going to take a while to implement all the tiny bits and pieces.

well you might get some head start... but at least something has to be made before it's activated.
anyway, it would bring some bonuses, it would bring some drawbacks (to certain class), if you wouldnt want you wouldnt have to pick a class and you would be just a regular player with default settings.
id give effort into balancing them - no class would be "the best", just opens new posibilities.

The reason I vote no is...
The reason I vote no is due to I like UO. I have played Diablo, and the other experienced based games and fell in love with UO. Then I found freeshards that did not place skill caps and fell even more into love. I love the idea that my main character can do anything. Now I will admit I am intrigued by the idea that we can have special craftables but no all the cost of losing the various skills on one player. I want my character to not lose out due to my earlier intentions of wanting a mage or crafter. This limit is no different than a skill cap. If the player choses to have a sword character then it loses the ability to use magery. That would limit that character's abilty to do every skill to the best ability with one character. If you added the experience level for new special items then OK. But don't change someone's ability to be legendary on all skills with one character. I understand that would still be possible, but what is the point if 120 equal only 100 skills level abilty?
