Is it possible to sell something and then pay the tokens to retrieve it from the day before you sold it?

No, can't be done because it is technically the same item (ID). I has to actually be lost somehow for the possibility to return it to you. And I wouldn't recommend testing it - it will most likely result in your tokens being confiscated and getting nothing - a result of trying to cheat the system.
