Right now bees are kinda broken. If anyone other than the owner of the house with the hives in it takes care of them, they don't produce.

ah i didn't know that. thanks you.
Re: bee services
That's certainly possible, but I'm not sure. I never heard one way or the other. What makes me think it may be a glitch is that alternate characters on the same account trigger the 0 production event too. For example, when I use Primal, my bees don't produce at all. When I use Taters, they produce, because she owns the house. Even though they are on the same account, it still doesn't work. Up until about a week ago, it didn't matter which of my characters I used. Of course, it's still possible that the house owner thing was done on purpose, and alternate characters on the same account were overlooked.Adrias wrote:I think this is on purpose to prevent people from doing other peoples bees for profitmojo519 wrote:Right now bees are kinda broken. Re: bee services
I hope Coli says one way or the other...
Bees are enough of a pain as it is..
first.. afaik you cant have more than 20 hives anymore, without losing production. Coli did this to keep people from making billions like we used to do wiht over a hundred hives.. this I understand and do not argue.
second, bees require daily care. if you miss a day it takes quite a bit of work/potions/time to get them thriving again. I understand this too, to keep people coming in and playing, no arguments..
finally what i do argue with, is that this is a game. We play it to have fun.. what is happening more and more, is that those of us that DO play it to have fun, are being punished for things that people who play it to cheat are doing.. (Anti mining macro for example) I DO understand he cannot babysit us, but when it comes to bees, we each have a real life to deal with. I am often called away, and cannot get on for two or three days. If the issue is with my grandmother, my wife and I may be gone for over a week.
this has caused me untold amount of pain in restarting my bees. in two years probably ten to twelve times I have had to restart them. Allowing a friend to care for them, and take the money for their services is a godsend over having to restart them..
People are abusing it, by putting bees on friends houses, and I am not totally guiltless, My wife has cared for mine in the past, and I have cared for hers, however, this was not with the intent of bypassing rules and regulations, but more along the lines of being at work late, sick, or otherwise unavailable.. while making them unproductive does get rid of the problem of the abusers, it also makes having a friend keep them up and running while REAL life takes you away for a couple days too painful. and unfair.
It is like gagging everyone that goes into a crowded theater so no one can yell fire and start a panic.. It's punishing everyone for one persons stupidity.
I am not angry about it in truth, but I, and others have asked in the past for some way to simply put our bees into hibernation when we MUST go away.. that would cure the problem completely, where making them unproductive means they still HAVE to be cared for, potions and time used, by someone that does not own them to keep them healthy or thriving, and it does sort of feel like being punished if real life takes me away from the GAME for a time....
In all fairness, Coli usually figures things out to be pretty fair. he may have simply done this to stop a big problem and is working on a better solution.. only time will tell.

This happens because the staff here is over worked and there aren't enough of them here. The only full time coder is Colibri I think and he has a life. So more often then not, simple fixes are better than anything else.
He probably did break them on purpose so that people couldn't place bees into friends houses until another more suitable solution can be found.
This shard needs new staff pretty badly, but Colibri has the rules wound up so tightly that hiring new staff is next to impossible. Its how things have been here for a long time, I think.

Re: bee services
I won't comment on the staff part because in my eyes that is a general position but what is lacking is more developers helping on the scripting side of things. While I can easily sit here and agree completely with the statement "Yes the shard needs more developers or at least some structured method for others to assist". Being a developer myself I also know the other side of the coin, to me source is a child to me. I am not incline to offer it to others, +C might be the same about this not sure. The reason it is key that +C has to be in the mindset to share is because while the current development of RunUO is at 2.1, this shard runs on a highly modified version 1. But know this, there are other problems that creep up when you do open up development as everyone thinks they have the next great idea or their code is perfect and above testing.
Re: bee services
About the bees, sort of a long story...
Way back, there was a request to make them possible to be accessed by co-ownes and friends of the house, in case one goes to vacation for a few days so that a friend can take care of the bees. Worked nice, but the problem was that this started to be abused more and more. There's been players who have taken care of numerous friend's houses, sharing the profit... and well that by itself isn't a problem, but it got way too much gold into the economy.
One solution discussed was that the friend and co-owner access would be disabled, but there would be a deed or somesort of an item with which bees could be put into hibernation. But instead I have made a simpler solution, that is, if the owner takes care of them they will work as normal, but if someone else does it, they are "disturbed by the strange person", and although they stay alive (as it should be if you're on vacation), they will not produce.
It wasn't announced because I wanted to see how many people did this. And as we already knew before, there's been several people who had been co-ownered to a "friend's" or "roomate's" house ... but all the roommate did was create the account and placed the house so that bees could be in it. So basically it was a form of multi-accounting to cheat the limit.
Another approach was to slash the prices on bees, but I figure it's quite fun to do them (as long as the limit is in place, before that people had hundreds of hives, bringing in lots of gold, all done with a simple click of the "play macro" button).
As for coding, yes help is appreciated. Well over the years there's been several candidates who talked big about coding a lot, in the end I got a small script full of bugs. And then there were a few who actually knew coding, submitted a script, then vanished
Being on RunUO 1.0 isn't so bad actually, it works, it doesn't crash... there's some lag spikes right now but it's not due to the version, but i suspect there's a script somewhere that takes a while to do it's thing, which it does for 0.5-1 seconds, making a short lag spike. Over the years I've also optimized and added to the core.

Re: bee services
OK, so.. in order to fix the cheaters it also fixed those of us who dont cheat... meaning in order to get someone to care for our bees we have to pay them out of pocket for bees that will not produce while gone... about the same as spending the time/potions to restart them... sigh...
Unfortunately I do understand why, and that makes it hard to jump up and down and whine and moan....
People who are mildly decent at coding.. tend to think they are god.. i have dealt with quite a few over the last year or so.. they like to brag, they like to tout their skills.. but when push comes to shove they seem to want recognition or pay more than they actually want to do the work.. somehow the work FOR pay part seems to have missed them completely... OK, so you have been working hard for two weeks.. but.. I have not SEEN any work yet so.... poof.. gone...
truthfully the shard shouldnt need a lot of staff.. and once an admin has been burned a time or two.. having less is worth more...
Anyhow Coli.. so, this is permanent? Plan on restarting bees when i return? Or is more in the works.... eventually?

Re: bee services
That's about it as far as bees are concerned. The other option was that they could be put into hibernation with a deed (or actually was planning on some special wood that would be burned, producing smoke) but even those sticks would cost like, 10-20k, that's per hive per 24 hours hibernation.

doesnt an aquarium have an item that effectivly pauses its status alowing your little fisheys to stay alive (but not produce rewards) without you needing to tend to them?
That said, i've always thought since bees are technicaly free money, (5 mins a day work for 1 mil a week) they shouldent be alowed to be "paused" i.e. the cost of free money is constant care. otherwise just give people 1 mil checks in a powersave once a week. its a trade off, no work, no gain.

Agree with this totally. It takes about a week to get bees going again triving and producing. Not that much cost or work for a guarenteed 1 mil a week. I dont think there should be a hibernation. Result of being logged on daily is access to the mil gold.
