Instead of replacing filtered words with asterisks, perhaps we could replace them with a more acceptable word.

for example:
F**k would turn into Fudge
F**king would turn into Flopping
A*s would turn into Donkey
As for the ***, i guess i'll think about it... If it's asterisks there you know that there was a cussword - without them it's seamless. But we just need to make sure only cusswords get filtered out, not anything else.
This way we do not have implied cusswords everywhere, as you pointed out, just a bunch of slightly comical safe words. :)

I have no problem with that idea. I have seen it done this way before, and it is quite commical. It also takes the edge off when people are typing out their frustrations. :D

knowing that a 'cuss' (and i use the term lightly) was used should not be a problem if it is filtered, assuming the the offensiveness is in the reading, not in the knowledge of its existence. *** still gets the emotion and meaning across, without being directly offensive.

if people get offended at even seeing **** .... god help us all

Well don't really think there is a difference between the real word and just putting the whole *** in myself to be honest, your still 'cussing' just few letters are covered up... I don't think it takes away the offence of the word personaly.

the whole point is to protect people from reading the word, not the thought behind it.
whether i am using Damn, darn, or **** you know its an expression of dismay, which may be mild or strong depending on context.

"**** this balron, he looted me" differs from "**** this wordfilter". (sidestepping entirely the debate whether 'damn' should be filtered at all, but i digress) (it shouldn't !)

the subtle difference is that one merely bans the use of a word,
completely 'newspeak'ing the thought behind it away is in my opinion a very creepy kind of Orwellian/McCartyanistic reflex. Outlawing expression of thought itself.

if i say frell, frack, or omzoodle this Balron you still know what i mean.

"this doublePlus ungood balron, has taken my plusgood gear, the plus unlikable creature. I shal no longer be its Komrade."

dont get me wrong, i understand that you feel how you feel, i do however STRONGLY disagree with it.

that said: i shall rest my case, both positions have been heard and we have no need to let this snowball.
We'll see what the future holds.
I stand firmly on the side of the comical relief of silly words RegEx'ing, asterisks a distant second.

Ok I agree about the whole word being **** out, just wouldn't like to see the starting letter and ending letter, This is prob the best bet, I thought you wanted just a few letters my mistake.

But I don't see where 'damm' comes into this... :?

because its filterd :) (and a lot more polite to use as examples than the S, C, F or N word, which actually could be construed to be offensive)

D**n is filtered, but "damm" is not a word.

If one chooses to use language IRL privately when they are adults, then that is their prerogative. But no one should be subject to it when they have not consented to seeing/hearing it. Even though reality is not so obliging, I believe that Excelsior should be.

Well I dont know if its possible but how about a user end word filter that they can set up? That way if someone is offended by the word corn they can filter it as well as anyo other words that most of us wouldnt find offensive. I mean some people might not like the word nazi.. some dont mind.. i think it should be a user side option :goodsuprise: :verymad:

Hehe, i agree with Pip.

Anyway, the problem with "assassin" or "glass fiber" has been fixed, if there's any other words that cause problems i think it's best if you PM me about them (so you dont have to write them here).

No offense to anyone, but, the English language is broad enough to encompass enough words to express your ire without cussing at all. I see absolutely no reason to inflict my bad habits upon others. I play this game to relax & "get away from it all" not offend people, or have someone's bad habit ruin my time.

If the game is causing distress for anyone, I would recommend getting away from your PC for a bit & reading a book, play with your pet, go to the park, or go gaze longingly into the refrigerator for a bite to eat :P
