seriously, why is glassfiber filtered to glfiber ?
considering we're talking about a word that can also mean "donkey or mule" arent we taking this wordfilter business a little too far ?

"ass"
It's been set to filter a couple different ways, the last time I remember messing with it it was filtering "ass_" and not "ass*" although it may have been changed since I was last on. I appreciate the desire to keep the chat clean but I really think ass, damn, and hell are going above and beyond(as I said I've been away so I don't know what if any of those are still being filter)the call to keep it clean.
I don't think anyone will disagree with the normal, s, f, b, words etc. The others just seem a tad... excessive.

Hehe ok then we'll stick to George Carlin's list :p
But anyway, most cusswords are set to for example "cuss " so that if you say "wordcusssomething" it wouldn't filter it. The basic filter of the chat system was very plain, i recently upgraded it with regex but I know it's not perfect yet.

Well, I thought it was a bit extreme the other day when I kept typing I was about to pass out and it kept coming out as pout out

yeah, its actually filtering out, soon people will start to go runescape style: fack, feck, dawmn, damm
wordfilters are the wrong answer to a non-exitent problem. if parents are seriously afraid of games influence on young minds they should not have their kids play a game where wholesale slaughter of entire species is not only condoned but rewarded

and the answer to any problem is always "mass murder with the very best equipment" in stead of something real-world rational like *gasp* diplomacy.

2. Language:
a. Keep chat clean - no cussing, arguing, harrasing, etc.
b. No racial/religious/national/ethnical slurs are tolerated.
c. Language rules in guild chat and private messages are not enforced, however, it can be taken as harrasment and reported to staff.
d. No advertisements or soliciting of any kind. Menchioning of a website, product, other shard, etc., is permitted to some extent, but should a staffmember deem your words to be an advertisement, you may be jailed, banned from chat, or even banned from the shard.
Let's not forget the rules
Now it's not just for the younger players, I don't really like hearing any off it myself, I think it's very unnesscessary for people to talk that way, it's very rude.
I don't even like to see "ass" in the world chat to be honest... In my eyes it's not good a new player coming in seeing that shouted about...
Just because certain words like this wont be filtered, does not mean you can go mad using it or even start using it now... it's still good to keep it as clean as possible.

you dont like the word glassfiber or assassination ? now that, my fiend is
hardcore conservative man
but seriously: i can understand that its filtered if it were redacted and slightly sane,
also: anyone who would quit the shard over the use of a 3 letter word (provided its somewhat in context) is someone we dont *need* anyway, someone with toes that long will flip out over something frivolous later on anyway.
i can understand if the use "seven 4-letter words you cant say on TV" is curbed somewhat, but even then only if the sollution is anywhere near sane, a **** would even be more sensical than the outright dissapearence of letters now, which not only frustrates communication but also makes you look like a total retard for not being able to spell or use grammar correctly. (or so it seems)
as for the "in the worldchat" argument, that may (thinly) hold to a certain extent, but in the game, especially in my own (guild)house that bird wont fly.
also: the word damn should be allowed back in, provided you use "that damn balron looted my body" and not "that g*ddamn baron looted my body".
This is not "Hello Kitty Island Adventure"
in conclusion: im
not trying to start some moral debate here i'm just saying that the wordfilter is
BADLY BROKEN and needs to be fixed or deactivated ASAP, because i for one am annoyed out of my wits with it. and i'm not the only one, just by far the most vocal.

i dont see how saying the exact opposite of my position constitutes agreeing, but i digress. (for the record, i was replying to Osiris, not coli)
my main peeve is the way the filtering happens, and the removal of letters. (it makes people look like a stuttering retard)
(redacting with *** would be the least-bad method of filtering )
of secondary nuisance is the fact that the 2 words (ass, damn) i listed are a bit silly to filter, with which he disagrees.
but as i said: that is secondary.

I did not say i want to keep the filter how it is nor do i wish to ban these words, I'm stating these so called 'minor words' are ones i would not like to see become regularly used on the chat.
If you play here you should know the rules if you don't there is no explanation for not knowing, which means you know we don't have strong langue here, which means there is a thin line between these 'minor words' and the stronger ones.
I think we can do without the filter... I think there is trust in our players not to use the strong words, but I do not think that is an opening to start using the minors... respect others and try not to use them.

We did do without the filter for a long time, and until a few months ago public chat stayed clean. But with an emphasis on attracting new players through the vote sites, we're going to attract(and have already) an element that frankly don't care what language they use. I also don't mind the filter, and while it would be nice to do without it, it really isn't a big deal.
And yes, I was referring Coli agreeing with us as to those 3 words not being a big deal and it being more then a little silly that they were in the filter.

I think this is mostly about the formation of letters within words that if written as a standalone word, would be a cussword... Assassin, glass blower... So i've redefined the word - it will now be filtered only if it's prefixed and postfixed by a space. So, "glass blower" won't filter anymore.
As for the ***, i guess i'll think about it... If it's asterisks there you know that there was a cussword - without them it's seamless. But we just need to make sure only cusswords get filtered out, not anything else.

Well, I think that it's like this: kids do not need to see this language, period. Obviously television brings it around, and kids with parents who don't teach them respect and the more appropriate adjectives and verbs in the dictionary will bring it to school. But that's no excuse to decide that it's just "ok" to use it everywhere.
This is not "Hello Kitty Island Adventure"
No this is Excelsior, aiming to be a leading example of civility and community, without the use of tasteless language.
Wherever possible, we need to be a good example to each other and especially those whose minds are so impressionable.
wordfilters are the wrong answer to a non-exitent problem
It is an existing problem, or we would have not begun the filtering.
I have also seen many times, where people will continue to use such language, trying to bypass the filter or use words just because they have yet to be filtered.
I myself believe that there should be a system implemented: when such a thing happens, you simply get a warning. After 3 warnings, you will be asked to complete 3 hours of solitary time.
This however, is my view and has not yet been discussed for implementation.
No player should ever end up in this position, if one would simply follow the guidelines and practice self control.

The only issue I have with the filter is that it takes changes words that aren't inappropriate and changes them. While maybe a little amusing at first, it gets frustrating at a point when your typing something as simple as pass and it's changed to pout. It took a few minutes for me to figure out why the person I was talking to couldn't understand what I was saying and then I had to type P A S S to get past the confusion!!

Most of you probably know, I have kids, and 8 year old and a 6 year old. I don't care if they hear damn, ass, or hell said around them, more specifically hell and damn. If I catch them saying it, then I'll deal with them. Kids hear words all kinds of places, and I'm under no illusion they've already at this point in their lives heard all kinds of things I have no clue about. Them saying it is different, when they turn 18 they can say whatever they want, but as the parent it's my job to decide whether that happens before then.
For a full year when I was working at the radio stations I did nothing but chat moderation, we had a PG13 environment and we had no word filters in place. For several hours per day I sat and watched chat and what went on. The bot kicked people who did say things that weren't allowed, after a while we did eventually use the filter but filters are by design very imperfect. To allow normal conversation without filtering things that shouldn't be filtered. I think myself something of an experienced person in regards to moderation and dealing with people. Sometimes you just have trouble makers that don't particularly care what the rules are and constantly push the limits, you just have to be willing to deal with those people when the time comes.
Since I came to this shard 2 years and 5 months ago it was understood that it didn't matter what you said, unless you were in public. Public consisted of [c and local chat in crowded areas. Party chat, Guild chat, and PMs have always been no-limit and anything said there is entirely at the discretion of the people involved(guild leader, group members). If we have to have a filter to keep a handful of words out of the public areas, so be it. I'm willing to accept it at face value that we do because there are a chunk of people that aren't willing to abide by the rules in public areas. Let's just be reasonable about it.
