Winter Event 2013

Post by +Nyx »

It's that time of year again!

The Grinch has teamed up with Jack Frost, Oogie Boogie, and a den of thieves to wreak havoc upon Excelsior! They have created an army of evil minions to protect them in their lair, have stolen all of Santa's gifts, and destroyed his magic suit. Without these, there can be no Christmas!

There are 4 quest lines varying in difficulty from relatively easy to rather hard.

These quests will be available until January 1st, 2014.

The most difficult quest is the "Save Christmas" quest, outlined below.

To begin, speak with Kalare, Santa's Head Elf. You can reach her by entering the holiday event portal in Moonglow. You will retrieve stolen items, gather enchanted items from the minion army, and defeat the holiday villains for a very special reward.

Important info:

YOU CAN FAIL THIS QUEST.

- You must fight the bosses (Jack Frost, Oogie Boogie, and The Grinch) alone. The items that grant you access to a boss' room are temporary and only last 30 minutes from the time you turn the quest in. Once you have entered the boss' room, you have 30 minutes to kill him or you will be ported out. NO second chances will be given if you do not complete the boss within the allotted time frame. We will not make exceptions for dropped connections (except in cases of verified server crash), death, or inability to do enough damage.
- Resists are incredibly important for this quest. If you do not have full or close to full resists, you may have a very, very difficult time completing it successfully.
- Since the bosses are fought alone, and the summoning item lasts only 30 minutes, it is a good idea to check the line for that boss before you turn in your quest book and receive the temporary summoning item! It is also a good idea to ensure that you have enough time to play without distraction before turning in the quest book to receive the boss tokens.
- The quest books will not decay until after the winter event has closed in January. Only the boss summoning tokens will decay quickly.
- Kalare's quest is difficult and cannot be grouped, nor can undergeared players be 'run through'. Items needed to complete the quest are not to be traded or sold. Players should not borrow gear from others in order to exploit this quest. If we catch you trying to do any of these things, all participants will be barred from all winter quests and their rewards removed, no exceptions.
- If you delete your quest book at any time during this quest, you will not be issued another.
- The quest items that spawn on tables inside the dungeon and on the mobs are TEMPORARY. Please add them to your quest book IMMEDIATELY upon taking them, it is entirely possible that the item could decay moments after being picked up (depending on when it spawned), and you'd have to go get another one.
- This quest cannot be repeated. This includes alternate characters on your account. Any attempt to circumvent this will result in being barred from all winter events and jail.
- The rewards for this quest is account bound and cannot be worn by any other character. Do not buy this item from a fellow player, you will not be able to wear it.
- There are ankhs and corpse stones inside each boss area.
- Exiting the dungeon has been modified to avoid exploiting. When you wish to exit the dungeon - Flip the switch, step into the sparkles and wait. It will open a moongate that leads out in 10 seconds.
- Healing has been diminished in this dungeon and all cleric spells have been disabled. Hunt with caution, insta-healers :)
- Failing this quest has no effect on the other quests.
NEW - 2 additional quest rewards have been added to this quest. When you complete the quest you will be given a reward voucher to bring to Matrika the assistant elf. She will give you an option between the 3 displayed rewards. Choose carefully, we will not change it out after the fact if you don't like what you picked.
NEW - Do NOT carry more than 1 book for this quest line at a time. If you spam the NPC, you may receive an additional book. This is considered an exploit, and we have added various systems in place to ensure that the quest cannot be completed more than once. However, if you are carrying more than 1 book for this quest line, you will not be able to fight the bosses, and will fail the quest entirely.

To access the other quests, step onto the green sparkle a few tiles to the North of the dungeon entrance.

The mid-difficulty quest is the "Santa's Magic Suit" quest.
Say 'hello' to Santa in his shack on top of the mountain. He needs you to gather various items using brute force as well as sneakiness.

Important info:
- Healing has been diminished for this area and all cleric spells have been disabled. Proceed with caution.
- This quest is not repeatable. This includes alternate characters on your account. Any attempt to circumvent this will result in being barred from the winter events and receiving jail.
- The quest books will not decay until after the winter event has closed in January. Only the boss summoning tokens will decay quickly.
- This quest may be grouped, but it is not intended or allowed for players who cannot defend themselves to be 'run through' by tougher players. It is also not intended for the quest items to be traded or sold. Nor is it intended for one to loan their gear to someone who could not otherwise do the quest themselves. If we catch you doing any of these things, all players involved will be barred from all winter events and their rewards removed, no exceptions.
- The quest items on the mobs are TEMPORARY. Please add them to your quest book IMMEDIATELY upon taking them, it is entirely possible that the item could decay moments after being picked up (depending on when it spawned), and you'd have to go get another one.
- If you delete your quest book at any time during this quest, you will not be issued another.
- The reward for this quest is account bound and cannot be worn by any other character. Do not buy this item from a fellow player, you will not be able to wear it.

The easy-difficulty quest is the "Artistic Elf" quest.
Say "greetings" to Callidora in the cottage to the Northwest of Santa's shack. She needs help replenishing her art supplies. In return, you will receive a random deco piece.

Important info:
UPDATED - There are 53 total deco items available. Some are more rare than others. All 21 of last year's rewards are available again this year, with an additional 32 rewards brand new for this year.
- This quest can be repeated every 6 hours. The quest books do not decay.
- Most everyone should be able to handle this quest, though it will likely present a respectable challenge for the low-level players.
- The quest items on the mobs are TEMPORARY. Please add them to your quest book IMMEDIATELY upon taking them, it is entirely possible that the item could decay moments after being picked up (depending on when it spawned), and you'd have to go get another one.
- Healing has been diminished for this area and all cleric spells have been disabled.

NEW for 2013 - Save the Reindeer Quest (Mid/High-level difficulty)
The reindeer have been forced out of their home grounds by invading predators. Without your assistance they will not survive, and Santa will have no reindeer to pull his sleigh! To access this quest, Go through the event gate in Moonglow, through the Low and Mid-level quests gate, and then through the Reindeer quest gate. Speak to Donner to begin.

Important info:
- You must be patched to run this quest!
- This quest is repeatable every 10 hours.
- This quest may be grouped.
- All mobs in this quest area have 0 weapon xp and reduced drops.
- Your quest books will expire after 8.5 hours if you have not completed the quest.
- Do not attempt to exit this quest area in order to wander the facet. We have systems in place to restrict the player to the allowed event areas only. If you are found outside of the event area on this facet, you will be jailed for exploiting.
- Do not attempt to utilize boats. As above, we have systems in place to prevent this and any methods used to get around it are exploits.
- The quest items on the mobs are TEMPORARY. Please add them to your quest book IMMEDIATELY upon taking them, it is entirely possible that the item could decay moments after being picked up (depending on when it spawned), and you'd have to go get another one.
- This quest has 27 never-before seen deco reward possibilities. All but 2 of these rewards are patch graphics. The 2 that are not are still entirely new, but they utilize an older graphic in order to match the Elf quest rewards' set.

Things to keep in mind with the quest system:
- Pets are disabled in all of these quest areas.
- Teleport, Recall, Mark, Gate, Sacred Journey, Personal World Teleporters, Bracelets of Binding, and various other spells have been disabled in all quest areas.
- Boats are NOT permitted to be used for any function regarding any of these quests. Don't even try to sail there.
UPDATED - You may not "glitch" out of the event area and wander the facet as you please. We have added safeguards to restrict access only to the allowed event areas. If we find you outside of the event area, you will receive jail for exploiting.
- All spawn camping/sharing rules are in effect for all stages of these quests. This also goes for the items that you must collect from around the event areas.
- All mobs involved in these quests will drop very little gold, very few tokens, and have no weapon xp.
- Any attempts to manipulate, cheat, or exploit any portion of these quests will result in removal of rewards, being barred from the event areas, and jail time.
- Your account must be at least 7 days old in order to run these quests. This is to prevent the (young) player status from allowing them to complete quests without being attacked.
- You may do all of the quests if you so choose.

TROUBLESHOOTING:
- If for some reason you believe your quest is bugged or has an error:
DO NOT DELETE OR TRASH YOUR BOOK.
If you do this, you are completely out of luck. We will not issue you another. Instead, page and explain the issue. We will assist you as soon as possible.
- If more than one person is near the NPC, it may not trigger properly. Wait until all other players have left the area, then walk away and back to the NPC. It will trigger then.
- Do NOT run away from the NPC immediately after it triggers! It sometimes takes awhile for it to process your reward and deposit it into your pack. If you run away too soon, you will receive no reward and we will not replace it. PERIOD.

Happy Questing!

"However, if you are carrying more than 1 book for this quest line, you will not be able to fight the bosses, and will FAIL THE QUEST ENTIRELY"

Trouble with the wording of this... Don't we fail the quest entirely if we fail a boss fight?

If you are doing the Artistic Elf quest. Say 'Greetings' to start the dialog with the quest giver. In order to make the deliveries, stand near the person for a second. (Make sure no other players are around)

Have only completed both deco quests and find them fun and well done. My only comment is that the reindeer quest might take a tad bit too long (approx. 3 hours with 2-3 players inside). I understand its new deco items and there are no free lunches, but players that only have an hour or two to log on a day might be unable to do this quest at all, as well as players turned off by the length of this quest.

A few suggestions would be: a) increase drop rate closer to 100% (especially for the rarer polar bears, nothing is more frustrating in finally killing one or two and not having the item on the corpse), b) maintaining current drop rate but reducing to 10 of each in the quest books (this would reduce quest time to approx. 1.5 hours), c) increasing spawn rate of all mobs except maybe ice golems (these tended to be more of and also they hit hard so it may cause problems for mid level players, dont know the affect on the quest), d) do not let the books expire so players can complete one book say in an hour or 2 and complete the remaining at a later point in time if they need to go to work, sleep, etc. (would maintain total quest time of around 3 hours).

These are only suggestions. Overall well done and excited to continue doing them. Looking forward for the other 2 quests. Congrats on the great work and creativity in the deco pieces.

Id second what alejandro said completely great job

I am just not sure why with the reindeer area healing was diminished, you already have stun mobs, para mobs and mortal strike mobs there in great numbers I could see this being excessively challenging to anyone not highmid/topend geared

I agree with the fact that it is a challenge to do the reindeer quest. I feel that it is a bit of what we can expect in the futurs facets. I like Alex suggestion just for the fact that last night i did part one and 2 of the quest and since it was late a didn't have time to complete the quest and the book was gone this morning. I to would have finish the quest in 3 hours or so. So if the book could not decay that would be great.

Thx for the hard work !!

I think its a case of volume of monsters, their specials combining and the diminished heal as 1 drawback

the 20 items is the other makes the quest rather long
especially in the second part where the polar bears seem to almost drop their piece as a rare.. its like alejandro is saying 3 hours or so

please bear this in mind I am not complaining I am still here plugging away at it, I am just thinking overall it might be worth tweaking for the enjoyment of everyone

Although I agree with your POV re: diminished heals, i think there was a less sarcastic way to get your point of view across wasn't there, the staff are trying to do something fun for us afterall

If we are going to complain (again) about restricting god mode in certain circumstances, please do so in a new thread.

I refuse to accept that limiting an ordinarily instantaneous healing rate, that usually keeps the player immortal in cases outside of mortal strike and fire breath from monsters with over 5k hit points, is unreasonable in cases where you have the opportunity to obtain an reward that closely resembles a level 100 relayer.

Please continue with quest specific concerns.

I think thats the only reason why I mentioned the diminished heal with the reindeer quest because

a) its not a relayerish quality piece of gear its deco
b) the mortalstrike/stun/para when its fully spawned and you aren't among 10 other players

but its not a dealbreaker thats for sure..

the polar bear droprate for claws is kinda more perturbing for sure
and overall I was hoping my tone was aiming more "constructively" than bashing hope this was the case

It was. No worries.

What percentage drop rate would you give to the polar bear claws?

Id say they drop about 1/10 as much as the counter item for that part of the quest the golem dust

overall on the killing part of the quest you could likely do 10 of each item and still retain the difficulty, but just bring the length spent on the quest more in line with a deco item

Okay, then that will have to be re-fixed. There are different ways staff can modify drop rates, thanks to Colibri's efforts. In this case, we are trying a relatively new way of doing so...and it apparently isn't working as desired.

Other readers, if you are getting frustrated with the drops in the reindeer quest, please hold off with that event until later in the day.
