Forum based RPG?

Post by Lagos »

Anyone feel like doing a forum based game of D&D (or Shadowrun, or whatever) going? I would be more than happy to run such a thing. :)

I've flirted with that idea many years ago in the BBS days before the Internet, but I couldn't see a way to make it work. Do you have a guide or explanation as to how it would work via forums.

If I get enough interest, i will post a full and detailed system for doing such a thing.

in short, I will provide rules for character generation, and how to handle random number generation.
I will describe scenes and the players will reply with how they attempt to handle those situations. one builds off of another until an ending is reached.

Players will need to be at least somewhat familiar with the rules systems under which we play (for example if I am running a D&D 3.5 game, I will expect players to have a good idea of how it works, and a bit about combat) and have at least limited access to rulebooks.

I'd give it a try if you can get it going. I played tons of AD&D Second edition. I'm pretty sure I can find PDF of the 3.5 books pretty easy.

I used to play (and even Admin) on a PBF forum. It was organized into 4 cities - a semi-D&D, Warhammer Fantasy, Post-apocalyptic and Legend of 5 Rings. It was a lot of fun, but in time it all died down because the GMs started to drop out and there was no one to take over. Still, a single shot RPG session would be a nice and could be a nice aspect to add some more Role Play to a mostly Game. ;)

It does require constant presence however - even with one update per day which is a snail's pace compared to standard pen and paper RPG. So people who drop in once a few days are sadly not very welcome in this kind of game. If you have no patience for doing bees every day than this is definitely *not* for you. :D

I personally might be interested if whatever setting we'd be playing suits my fancy. :D

your necromancy skill has increased by .01

I jest of course, but I didn't get much in the way of positive feedback, so I don't think enough people will be interested. I'm still open if I get enough sign-ups though.

I played abit of Shadowrun with some of my platoon on a deployment. I would be down to give it a shot if this still a topic of interest.

That's five by my count, plus you. I'm sure we will pick up a few wondering adventurers as we go.
