William Hartnell -the first Doctor (who)
William Hartnell -the first Doctor (who)
I just want to encourage all you Doctor Who fans to check out the William Hartnell episodes. In my opinion he is the best Doctor by far. Don’t be taken back by the black and white episodes, in fact, the black and white helps make the cheesy cardboard sets look more believable. The way he portrayed his character is awesome. Many of the early episodes were based in history, but I prefer the more sci-fi ones. Actually these old episodes are pretty "hardcore sci-fi. They can easily be found on the torrents, if anyone needs help on finding them let me know. Here are a few good serials (although there are many more) I would recommend.
Season 1 – The Daleks

Season 1 – The Keys of Marinus

Season 2 – Planet of Giants (This is pretty much “Honey I shrunk the Kids”)

Season 2 - The Daleks invade Earth
http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/ ... kinvasion/
Season 4 – The Tenth Planet (First cybermen and first Doctor Regeneration) **The final episode is a partial reconstruction, but the regeneration scene is in tact
http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/ ... nthplanet/
I wasn’t a big fan of the second Doctor Patrick Troughton, however this is an excellent Cybermen serial
Season 5 – Tomb of the Cybermen
http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/ ... bcybermen/
Again, I’m not a huge fan of the Tom Baker years either (although I know many are) but this is far and away the best Dalek serial I’ve seen ever, it deals with their creation and it’s the first appearance of Davros.
Season 12 – Genesis of the Daleks
http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/ ... sofdaleks/
P.S. I can't wait to fight a Dalek in game!
P.P.S My Fav modern Doctor is David Tennant, he gave us some amazing Doctor Who.

Re: William Hartnell -the first Doctor (who)
Good episodes I still have most of them on VHS as well as a bunch on my Media Server...Sylvester McCoy was my favorite doctor mainly because he was the Doctor at the end when I was most into the show. I also think that Christopher Eccleston Was a great doctor as well, If only he would have stayed longer....Now If only we can get Simon Pegg as The Doctor that would be totally complete chaos on the show I think. Also wish they would bring back the Master again or Rani even.
Re: William Hartnell -the first Doctor (who)
I am a big Tom Baker head but both McCoy and Hartnel I really appreciate, the only one that I am kinda sour on (and thats relative still like the episodes) is colin baker, the outfit wasn`t befitting a timelord..
with the modern stuff I am 50/50 split almost with tennant/smith giving a slight edge to tennant. and I am sure in a year or so's time that will shift to Peter Capaldi...

I've never been into Dr. Who much, I'm not much of a sci-fi nerd but I've always wanted to give it a shot, I have one friend who's really really into a hardcore dr. who fandom, and she's telling me I should start out watching the newer stuff if i'm not into the old cheesy black and white episodes, but would it really be the same experience? how long will it take for me to get through the old you think? and i mean every episode
(basing on the fact that i could watch an entire season of breaking bad [around 13 episodes] in a day off easily)

my wife started with the 2005-> stuff and she is now known to quote doctor who 7x a day or so...
the only thing is she doesn't believe me when I say tom baker is better than any of these new ones

I was told to start from the 9th regeneration and watch to to the newest one to get a better idea of the whole storyline, and then go back to the original episodes and rewatch everything from the very starting season one about the daleks.

Re: William Hartnell -the first Doctor (who)
yeah that can work for a great many people and its easier to get into that way
the classic series there are around 300+ hours of episodes to get through many of them are really great but some are lost forever and many are hard to come by

Yes, start with the new stuff for sure.
I actually find the black and white episodes are less cheesy then many of the episodes from the 70s and 80s.
I'm a pretty big doctor who fan, but I think many of the episodes from certain eras are a bit horrible to be honest. I think it would be hard to watch every available episode right through. All you need to know is the doctor never really dies, when he is "killed" he "regenerates" and takes a new form (a new actor)
If you want to go back after watching some new stuff, William Hartnell and Tom Baker are good places to start.

Re: William Hartnell -the first Doctor (who)
Melkor, thanks for brining up an awesome subject.
I don't know anyone in rl who watches the show so I rarely have an opportunity to talk about it. We disagree on our taste in Doctors, heh.. I started watching Tom Baker as a kid and even as an adult I think he and David Tennant best captured the essence of the Doctor. I genuinely like many of the others but I wouldn't put any of them in the same class as those two. I watched the early ones for a sense of completion but I was already used to and a huge fan of a light, humorous Doctor so it was pretty rough for me. Those Hartnell episodes are about as funny as Forbidden Planet, lol. I wish I'd started off with Season one, I'd probably appreciate all the Doctors a lot more.
Acacia, I wouldn't watch Tom Baker very early on in your Doctor Who sojourns. Many fans, incluuding me, think he was the best. You probably don't want to make him your benchmark.
I don't guess that there's anything wrong with starting off at the Ninth Doctor. If you're not used to/a fan of archaic sci-fi sets and props then it makes a lot of sense to do it that way. I don't think it would give you a better idea of the Doctor's story than starting off with the old episodes though. Also the dynamic between the Doctor and his companions is tremendously different than it used to be and I think it'd be easier and more natural to progress from Sarah Jane Smith to Amy Pond than the other way around. I'd recommend trying to watch from the VERY beginning (like I should have). Then if you enjoy it great - if you feel like you want to stab your own eyes out then hop to the 5th Doctor or later and see how those look to you.
