Videogame recommendations/suggestions

Post by +Colibri »

I'm looking for recommendations on videogames to play. Just for fun, to relax, but also to get more in touch with the virtual world. I hope to get some inspiration for game mechanics while I'm at it.

I saw this thread, and there's many old games mentioned - so what's more recent?
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=14214

I guess mostly medieval/adventure/dungeonish themed, but anything goes :)
Nothing too new, I have a 1060ti graphics card (the most powerful fanless card that I could find).
(Also looking for recommendations for co-op games, something I can play with my wife. We played a bit of Path Of Exile some 6 years ago).

Recently, on rare occasion that I play, I end up playing Half Life 2 & sequels, TrackMania Nations, oh and Portal & sequels (although I'm trying to get my mind into more magic and mystery, not so much problem solving, there's already enough of that).

I would suggest Asheron's Call and DDO (Dungeons and Dragons Online), since UO was drafted roughly by D&D mechanics when it began. :D

Edit addition : I would even suggest pen and paper D&D, if you're looking for inspiration. Even just thumbing through the books.

Ashes of creation looked very interesting, when were watching vids about mechanics and world interaction about 2 years ago, could give some inspiration points perhaps. but its still under construction and wouldn't be ftp... as far i know, Or you can could watch anime
Or as Dirtybook said, books, would even suggest, books about real life mechanics- physics, chemics, in some popular science form they can be really inspirational, just add a drop of magic in it  .

If you like open worlds like Ultima Online and you haven't played Subnautica yet, you're missing a real gem. The first betas came out in 2015 but the 2.0 update was released last year.

The Dragon Quest Series is great. I’d recommend the SNES Japanese-English fan translations for most. There are various versions of most of the titles.

Dragon Quest (Known as Dragon Warrior in the west for many years) is the first RPG that I got into. This commercial got me so excited at the time

On another note for anyone interested I haven’t been around lately because I had a massive flood and have been in hotels and staying with family for the last 2.5 months while they fix my place. I get to go home Friday!

over the last 3 or 4 years i've gone through some first person shooters, natural selection 2, valorant , overwatch

valorant and overwatch are almost the same game, but natural selection is quite a bit more unique
marines vs aliens, both teams require a commander, and the commander plays the game in RTS style placing a blueprint for certain structures across a map, it requires other players to build these structures, defend them, or attack enemy structures and bases
it really is one of the best games ive ever played in my life so much so ive spent almost 1300 hours on it (it started off as a mod for half life the same as counter strike did, just never achieved the same publicity but i found it to be a much better game

both of my kids are still playing world of warcraft (i can almost hear groans coming from the comment section)
ive long since lost interested but its hard to argue it wasnt a good game,
i liked the way dungeons were instanced, i liked the daily quests and reputations (it became too much when it was requirement and not a fun side adventure) a randomised daily/weekly quest is something id like to see here, go kill 100 lich lords and 50 blood elementals, get some random reward a runic kit/hammer with X charges, a level 6 tmap, a moderate bag of reagents or ingots , a deed to add 1 level to a weapon, or, just a coconut
just some ideas thrown out

You know what? I agree with Melkor on the Dragon Quest series. I know it as Dragon Warrior though. (I'm from the West, North America.) It's a great series, I have 1,2,3,4, & 7 in my video game collection.

Makes me want to rename some of my equipment with items names in the Dragon Warrior Series.. Many wonderful memories from those games!

If you have a USB controller, I'm a big fan of 2d platformers like Ori and the Blind Forest or Hollow Knight.

If you're looking for other MMO's to play... Image

Personally, when I'm not playing on uoex, it's with OpenTTD that I pass the time. There are many online content to customize the game to your liking, whether it's realism or very complex trains networks. I play with an old dual core laptop running on linux lubuntu with integrated video card.. the same system i use to play uo. Currently I am making the complete map of Japan in 4096X4096 with Shinkansen networks, metro and extreme industry settings. The pleasure I find there is a bit the same as that of decorating my house in uo. It's easy to find the game on the net i suggest looking for this version: OpenTTD JGRPP https://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?t=73469

Have Fun !

Being a fan of Garriot for many many years. I'm hoping his latest ideas for a new MMO come to fruition! (Unlike Tabula Rasa or Shroud of the Avatar)
https://ftw.usatoday.com/2022/04/richar ... ultima-nft

"Now, along with long-time friend and producer, Todd Porter, Garriott has founded DeMeta, a game development company that’s creating an MMO built on blockchain and NFT technology, where players can own and profit from in-game land, items, and community creations. "

As Cerrera mentioned that Ashes of Creation has some awesome graphics and seems also to have good game mechanics. Check out this this Cyclops battle on the bottom of this link!

Grim dawn is a nice dungeon crawling game with tons of weapon swapping and a good story line.

In Ultima VII, Garriott and his team forgot half of what made the first six Ultimas great. In Ultima VIII they forgot the rest. Then in Ultima IX they forgot how to write working software too.

In fairness, the abstraction of an "open world game" didn't come along until later, even though in retrospect the first six Ultimas were very much open world games. Black Gate was too, except that it had a linear plot and if you fell off the plot line by wandering off and exploring for a while it was almost impossible to find your way back. They "fixed" that in Pagan by making the game world linear too.

From his comments in the article, it sounds like Garriott hasn't found his way back either. Blockchain? NFTs? Really?

Saw just that there is some update in cyclops battle, was not willing to look so long video, anyway i talked about some mechanics and world interaction. Class merging, some effects coming out of that (ok we dont have classes here ) but got some insane idea which needs to be concretized . Also economy, nodes etc had interesting approach.. he said he wants inspiration, am guessing it has some potential to give inspiration for something completely new.
Also why mentioned anime, cause question was about spells, in eastern culture is something called chi,you can see much variations of how ppl imagined using it in anime. Its some kind of life force surrounding us all and can be channeled so its not exactly spell, in terms of uo it could be something that could take stamina and in some cases even hp

im surprised no one has suggested ultima online. not 100% sarcasm i do think maybe seeing the game from a different perspective might be helpful.
