So I started about a day and a half ago and managed to get a decent ammount of gold and some nice items. Unfortunately I ended up learning what item insurance is the hard way and exactly how the death mechanics work compared to other MMORPGs at the same time and ended up losing my mount, all my gold, and all my decent items the first time I died.
How long do you have to use the corpse stone? If there isn't a time limit I'll suck it up and earn the 20k I'll need to get my exceptional viking sword w/fireball and life-leach back (not to mention the exceptional platinum ringmail and a few other nice purchases I had made earlier in the day.) If not I may just reroll a fresh character since working back up from nothing is more daunting than using a character that at least starts with a weapon and a mount.
On the plus side i did learn about the insurance system and death mechanics from this. On the down side my account just lost "young" benefits since I also just got over 1000 skill points.

The time limit is 10 or 15 minutes (not sure which one), so you can't use the stone now. But insted or rolling a new char I'd suggest you play with your old one. You'll just end up with fresh char - no skills and 1k gold in your pack. Everything else (like the Young status) is tied to the account, not char so there's no benefits of making a new char.
As for your equipment - pm me in-game and I cen help you get some new stuff. And other players might do the same. So don't despair - youll get better eq (and mount) than you had before.

i learned the hard way and lost a titan hammer bow. 
when i found out about item retrieval service it was months away. i know how you feel. last titan hammer went for about 1k eds.

Thanks for the offer of help. Being without a weapon was the most frustrating part. I was going to go ahead and just stick to the character - except a little wiser about not risking all my worldly belongings. Figured I'd swing by the new player donation room and pick up one of the armor sets and a couple of the weapons I dropped off earlier. Granted I now understand most of what I dropped off would have possibly been considered trash but hey trash is treasure to a guy with empty hands and no cash right?
But when I got there all the chests were completely empty - and there had been about 12 sets worth of armor and 50 weapons a half hour earlier when I had decided to repay my original use of the donation room. Guess someone either cleared out all of what they considered trash or went bin raiding. I decided to go ahead and create a new character just for the weapon and armor. Still have the old one but he only represents about 12 hours of actual game-play and I like my new character's name better.
Very surprised "Marneus Calgar" wasn't already taken though. I don't mind starting over as much as I thought I would, even with only 1000 gold. It's actually a little more fun for some reason now - probably because I have a realer sense of peril without an overpowered set of gear for a beginner and everything I do find seems like a real step up. NOT gearing myself to the gills before I know what the heck I'm doing has been a surprisingly good situation to be forced into. Also I'm not picking up every piece of garbage I can so my inventory isn't a mess and I don't have a mount whose death means 20 minutes of shuttling said garbage back to a safe area where I can transfer it back to that damnably suicidal llama.
People have been very helpful too. I think I must have been playing during off hours on "Tigurius" since the ammount of player interaction I've actually had with "Marneus Calgar" in the 2 hours I've played him has been about 10 times more than the entire time I had "Tigurius." Within about an hour of entering the newb area people actually said hello a couple times and, unprompted, Kufu gave me a nightmare and Samuel gave me a decent bracelet. A mount who won't get killed when a rat looks at it the wrong way has made life so much less frustrating. So thanks for that one Kufu!

See? What did I tell you? While (most?) ppl don't hand out free arties just because someone's wants them, you can get pretty decent gear if you ask politely. Same goes for knowledge - if you ask nicely there is a good chance you'll get an answer, unless no one knows what you're askin? 
Personally I think that getiing the gear is part of the fun, but I can understand that losing all your belongings beacause you didn't know something can be frustrating. It happened to most of us at one point or another so players tend to help others in such situations. Glad it all worked out for you, and hope you'll stay here for the long haul.
