Controlling a mule

I've a tamer char and I've tamed and passed a mule to my 2nd char who is a crafter. This crafter has 100 animal lore but no taming. I found that the mule is totally out of my control (it's wonderfully happy and bonded), does this mean I must have taming (what level?) on this crafter char also in order to control this mule? I wanna use a mule with this crafter mainly for protection
