Making bows

Post by Deedra »

Ive got a few questions about making bows, while some of them I have an answer to Id like to get a general consensus.

Ive tried making bows from all types of wood and the only thing I can see different is the type of damage done. Is this it or am I missing something? Along that line most people seem to use a petrified wood bow which does 100% physical damage. Why is that, are there not monster who have some or all immunity to physical? Wouldn't a Zircote bow be best, does 4 types of damage at 25% each.

Im considering making bows to sell at lvl 100 with no points spent, is there much of a market for this and if so whats a good price to ask? Id be doing this with bows with 3-4 stats in the 40s' as I figure these would be the only ones worth doing.

If anyone else has suggestions for a newish player on how to go about doing this please feal free to chime in. :)

You need to use Runic Tool kits to get good bonus's in your bows. You can get them from elementals that are summoned when using a gargoyle axe on trees. People use Petrified because its the rarest wood and gives the biggest bonus's. You can use a chivalry spell to make your damage type be the type the enemy has the weakest resist to.

Crafted weapons only get 3 points per level instead of five. You don't get too many good ones, 1 bow out of every 2-3K are good. If you want to sell fresh bows, you can, but its not a very good money maker to be honest. Selling levelled weapons is good money, but I wouldn't do it with crafted bows. You can take orders from people on levelling, or level a more commonly used weapon and sell it.

Well, the wood type only influences the damage type and durability so you can basically craft from any type of wood. It'll just mean some pieces will need powder of fortifying (or stain of durability, which I heard works as PoF for wood items). The runic tool influences the amount and magnitude of properties on bows made, but even with petrified fletching tools don't expect a (good) 4x40+ often. The 1 in 2-3k Melkor mentioned is a baseline for an ultimate piece with 4 relevant and high stats. Bows that are good, but not optimal come every few hundred or so. Taking the amount of resources spent to craft some sale-worthy pieces it is not really a profitable business. Don't take it as discouragement, but if there was money in it, people would be doing it. En masse. But somehow a good crafted bows are hard to come by.

Example math:
(DISCLAIMER! The numbers used are very rough approximations to get an idea across.)
Let's say you make 500 yumis, you're lucky and get 2 good pieces (50k per) and 1 outstanding one (say 200k and that's pushing it). You used 7500 petrified boards @ 400k and 500 petri fletching tools @ 600k or so. That's 1 million in raw materials not including any ancient smithy hammers and investment in +fletching gear for a net loss of 700k. Sure, you can get all the raw materials for free, but then again in the time you spend doing it you could farm balrons. You get the gold anyways and you save yourself the hassle.
