How to train (beginner's question)

Post by Rackball »

Hi everyone.
I have a few quick questions that maybe some of you might be able to answer. I just started playing UO again after roughly 10 years and I just simply forgot most of it. I played on a different server with different rules back then and here are a few things I was wondering about:

1. Combat skills training. I remember there was always a lot of "sparring" going on back then. All I had to do to train my archery/fencing/tactics (you name it) was to go to a place, find a partner, find a healer and off we went. Hours and hours of just standing around hitting each other while being healed by the healer. We trained our combat skills, healer practiced healing. I know that Excelsior is a no PvP server, however is there anything similar to this going on at all? If yes, where can I find it? The problem just simply is that if I want to do PvM, I am way too weak to even beat the basic beasts and I keep dying all the time. Much help is appreciated.

2. Do I REALLY desperately need razor to play well? I am having major problems installing the software on my computer; I've tried possibly everything there is and the program still doesn't run. How important is it to have it running properly?

Thanks a lot in advance. I hope I'll see some of you on the shard. Keep playing!!

HiYa

Only been here a couple of weeks myself. Great shard, great people. Enjoying it more than the OSI shard I played years back :)

The Wiki has LOTS of info for us newbies :)

For training combat up to lvl 75 go to the training rooom. Read about it here...

http://www.uoex.net/wiki/New_Players_Gu ... ining_Room

Razor ? Something like that not essential but makes life so much easier.

The guys who wrote Razor are now developing a new program AssistUO, which I'm using. Don't know how it compares to Razor because I've never used that. But it's making my life easier. Maybe worth yr time to download that and see if it installs any better ?

You can get it from the developrs here... http://www.runuo.com/

Have fun, maybe see you ingame

Thanks again for the help; I've been training and even tried the newbie dungeon (yet I died on the second level because I didn't realize that I can actually be hurt there) :-)
As I keep playing, I am having some more questions that pop up, so if you guys don't mind answering a few, it would help me tremendously.

1. Playing as a ninja, what types of weapons / combat skills should I focus on? I know this is a very ambiguous question since everyone seems to have their own ways of success, but is there a general recommendation that you have? Should I do fencing or swordsmanship or one of the other combat skills and weapons linked to them? One handed or 2 handed? Anyway, you get the idea.

2. I lost my pet llama after roughly 10 minutes of playing when I died attacking small monsters. I got teleported almost directly to the healer and never was able to find my pet's ghost. Is there any way for me to recover this pet so I can use the free resurrection stone or should I just start thinking about obtaining a new pet?

3. I remember from when I played years ago that usually it was better to trade with other players rather than NPC vendors. This was for many reasons, some of which being better prices or just simply more advanced items. Is this the case on Excelsior as well? If yes, is there a large market/ place where people meet and trade?

4. One last question. Is there a list of armors and armor/weapon materials that is specific to Excelsior? I remember seeing armor and weapons made out of precious metals like mithrill and other ores, but I haven't seen any of that around here yet.

Anyway, if you can answer at least a few of these I'd be extremely thankful. I hope you all are having just as much fun playing as me. Thanks!!
