Things I wish I knew earlier
Things I wish I knew when I joined the Shard: (No, I did not read the WIKI first).
Read the WIKI... it has very valuable information that will help you get a solid start.
Join ETA (Excelsior Training Academy) so you can ask all the noob questions in Guild Chat (not public) and Vets wont get annoyed and tell you to L2W (Learn 2 Wiki).
There is no Skill cap, just a Stat cap. No need to create multiple characters, you are a Swiss knife of awesomeness.
Take advantage of skill knife / public trainers. There is even an Archery knife. Make sure you take off any armor first.
On character creation, don't put points into Weapon skills or any skill that can be easily be raised on a trainer. Put them into resource skills like lumberjack or mining.
Use the 60 point skill ball in your bank on Animal Taming. Taming is extra DPS and gold generation from day one.
Always be on the lookout for LRC items. Getting to the 100% LRC suit is the key to maxing out your skills without costing a small fortune. I would prioritize this over getting a house. Use that gold on suit items instead.
If you had an NPC friend in FEL, don't go visit, he didn't make it.
Champ Spawns:
Your starting lama is a PACK lama, never go to a Champ spawn without him. Getting trapped in FEL because you are encumbered is no fun. Put that phat loot in yo lama.
Have a way to cure poison (POT /Spell /Band-aid) before going to Champ spawns.
Bring a Bow to Champ spawns, it will give you more survivablity and VETS wont have to stop the attack to Rez you.
Oh and Never store items in the Blue backpack....
Hope this helps or add your own experiences.

Take advantage of the daily voting through the web site and collect the ED from it. I did not know about this till about day 20. That is 20 ED I missed, or about 1M gold. Ugh.

Lumberjacking would be a waste. You can train to 75 by attacking a trainer with a cheap axe. So is mining.showxxl wrote:On character creation, don't put points into Weapon skills or any skill that can be easily be raised on a trainer. Put them into resource skills like lumberjack or mining.
Pick skills that are expensive or hard to train from 30ish to 50. Good candidates are:
Animal Taming
Blacksmithy
Bowcraft
Carpentry
Fishing
Remove Trap
Tinkering
Also, save your skill ball on your prime character. You'll want it later to push a hard skill from 60 to 120. Create a disposable bootstrapping character with 40 animal taming and use the +60 skill ball. That and a couple tens of thousands of gold (easily gotten by voting) gives you mules which, with acceptable veterinary, gives you free run of a bunch of decent money making areas including Destard and Fan Dancers.

Re: Things I wish I knew earlier
This is a great thread that I hope all new players see and remember! I know I did many of those things, like using my skillball on Magery!! That mistake cost me tons of money having to level the more annoying skill (taming, poisoning, etc.)

While I understand many people get frustrated with being referred to the wiki, I have come to the realization that there is no nice way to say read the wiki. As a Vet, I don't get annoyed when people ask questions because if I am able to help it will help the shard grow and possibly keep them here. I do sometimes get frustrated when I do feel like I've helped them a lot but they won't take my advice and do something simple to help themselves, like browse the wiki. People generally take offense by being referred to it in World Chat because they just assume the one saying it is deflecting the question and sending them because they don't want to answer it. The thing is, the wiki explains things SO much better than someone can over messages because it shows pictures and goes in depth, which is something most players do not have time to do. As a new player, what would you rather people saying to get people to read the wiki other than, "Go check the Wiki." I do agree it sounds pretentious or elitist but most of the time people just say it because it truly is the best source of info our shard has. I know I've helped a few people and mentioned the wiki and they had no idea it even existed. I probably should have made a thread about this but I thought by adding onto your thread for beginners we could all come up with a better solution to the "Wiki Problem"showxxl wrote:Things I wish I knew when I joined the Shard: (No, I did not read the WIKI first).

I agree so much with everything you've said about the wiki. As a new player, I have found it the ultimate guide to everything UOEX. I don't feel you're tooting your own horn at all and make very solid points.Legendaries wrote:I don't mean to sound like I know everything or toot my own horn. So many of us newer players often find ourselves floundering once we realize how detailed every aspect of this game is, even those of us familiar with OSI. Often questions are asked in chat that require more explanation rather than a single one-liner answer.
And let us not forget about the forums either. Some very valuable information can be found on the forums when the wiki is lacking.
Happy Gaming!

Good comment re the WIKI and also the info above re getting started.
I also find UO Stratics and UO Guide to be extremely useful even though some aspects of Excelsior are different.
Also vendors.uoex.net is good for searching for items for sale on player vendors.
Perhaps Admin could add a book to the bag of newly created toons which says ' The WIKI is your Best Friend: Read!' And maybe a sign saying same in training room. The message in the book could point them to where to find the WIKI and Forums.
It strikes me that this is the same problem as someone getting a new 'toy' and not being able to get it to work because they didn't read the Instruction Manual.... how many of us are guilty of that!!

This is very helpful when trying to find items. Easier than searching through bag after bag on vendors. I just thought I would highlight it. Yes, they do not show prices on purpose. I just saw someone online asking about wood workers keys. A quick search shows only one set on a vendor. Could be why they were asking in chat. But this does save a lot of time of searching through backpacks if an items is really not out there.

Re: Things I wish I knew earlier
The problem with this site is that it does not show you all of the vendors only those in TC, MZ and those that have elected to pay to have theirs listed so there are still a lot of places that sell items that are not on the site.

How does the voting work? Are we talking about voting for the shard? I clicked on the links and voted, does it tell uoex.net that we voted?

Yes, when you vote, it records your IP address. Then you go to the town center and click on the voting stone. It will match your IP address to the votes received from your IP address and award ED. You can vote once every 24 hours. If you read through the forums, it is only awarding ED based on one of the 4 voting sites. There is talk about additional rewards for those who vote on all 4 sites. Not sure where this stands though.
