Yah, the fact that most monsters run for cover when their hp gets low is probably the most annoying thing when you level a melee weapon. A few of them stay toe to toe with you until they die. I would like to salute their courage. At this moment, the ones that I found that don't back up are the liches, the lich lords and the devorer of souls, wich all give 60-100 hp.
Maybe it would be cool to make a list of the monsters that don't retreat when they get low HP.
the best weapon to level. hm... depends on what your looking for? titan's hammer is good for the +15 in strength, and is a very nice item to relayer. for a battle weapon (non-relayer) i suggest a breath of the dead changed to a bow. it's got 100% in life leech and you can add 60 % in mana leach. if you turned such weapon into a halberd you also then have the whirlwind attack and every monster you hit you gain life from. now here's the catch. any crafted item only gets 3 points if you wanted hit lightning the cost would also be 3 points for each point. artifacts gets 3 points also, but hit lightning costs 6 points (twice the normal). now LOOTED items gets 5 points per level and cost for hit lightning is 3 points. so you see the best items in the game to level are looted items, and changed arties (cost 200eds). eds cost at the moment 45k per eds which would cost you 9 mil to change an artifact into a normal looted item. besides that level weapon deeds are 100k tokens, which isn't that much if you stay in doom guantlet for awhile.
i hope this helps and good luck. if you would like to see a breath of the dead change contact me in game and i'll pop over and show you.
Anarchy, I have a similar weapon to one you mentioned. It is a Breath of the Dead that I had changed to a radiant scimitar. I chose radiant because it is a 1 handed wep with whirlwind attack as a special move. The downside is that since it is a ML wep, whirlwind is the only special it has (bladeweave does not work on this shard). The upside is that I can use a shield with it. I've already added the stats (str, dex, hp) and I am working on the mana leech now. While it isn't the best weapon in the game, it is very fun to play with. I'm a mid-level player, so the "heal every hit" thing helps a lot.
mojo, ohhh radiant forgot about that one, and it's a good one too. also, i've been making a mistake on the artie points per level it's 5 points per level but everything costs double.
my guild member and i were talking one day and we were saying how crafted items are really terrible to level compaired to looted items. here's our thoughts:
looted items start higher; for example more 3 x 58% but... cap would be 60
crafted items start lower; for example top crafted 3 x 40 but... cap would be 70.
it may just make the crafted items some what balanced and equal to a looted item.

I've found that rune beetles are an excellent choice for leveling weapons if you have good (150ish) dex and gm or better healing/anat. They give about 900-1k gold, bones for tailors, right at 100xp per kill, and are plentiful if you know where to find them. They also don't run away and are much easier to kill than balrons.
ok,
but who do i speed up the leveling?
i fight drakes and dragons in Desterd but I still only gain a few points per night (about 1 or so hours of fighting) what or where do i fight to gain faster?

Not necessarily. Grizzle for example gives about 70 exp compared to liches which give 90. Minotaurs.
give about 70 as well. My advice is find mobs that dont run from you. Some experimenting with hunting will give you an idea what is good. Hot tip there is a reason there is alot of vets in doom
