Wondering about pet leveling

It seems pets level at an extraordinary rate, considering I was able to completely level a dog on an echee. Is there a reason for this? I've never played before but it seems a little lame, as the challenge is gone. Or am I just missing something?

Leveling a single pet is pretty quick, but when you get to breeding 10-20 of them and leveling all the offspring it can get pretty time-consuming. Check out The Wiki for more info on breeding.

you're probably thinking of leveling in terms of like, evos or something. Leveling a pet here is quick b/c they dont have like, progressive stages. There's also 2 things people refer to as leveling. 1. getting all the ability points from the pets levels (i.e. level 22/22). Then some people think of leveling like 2. getting the pets fighting stats (anatomy, etc) trained up as high as they can go.
And leveling a pet isn't like leveling a weapon, again, with the evo leveling idea. when you level a weapon you gain XP and keep moving up, like an evo, and it becomes harder to level as you go (or just more time consuming). With pets they dont continue to gain XP on their own. You gotta breed them to give them some new levels, and when a pet cant breed anymore or you maxed out it's levels then thats it, he wont go any farther just b/c he's fighting things.

So these concepts of leveling are 2 totally different things.

Hmm, good to know should I ever start playing World of Warcraft. :)

I just got off dial-up so I'm exploring the world of online gaming, and considering the only thing I could play before that was Runescape (barely)... I guess I'm a little used to hours spent on a single (almost useless) level. Thank you Llexa, I guess I will try breeding and what-not and see if things work out well... I'm just hoping that it slows down a bit, I heard that after lvl 40 something that they cant breed... wouldn't want to blink and have my pet be to old to get it up... :|

Aye, if its slow your looking for, get a pair of lvl 26 to 30 mules, and start leveling/breeding to max them, that will keep you occupied for a couple months :)
max lvl for breeding is lvl 42 your pet can have a max lvl of higher than 42 like 43 to 45, but you can still breed it if you dont LEVEL it over 42, and once they reach gen 10 they can no longer breed either. SO, when oyu het gen 9 lvl 42, you will be able to breed that line fo the last time, and are forced to "back breed" to a low lvl/gen pet and start all over again.. eventually, you will end up with pets that have max hits/str/dex etc. It takes a lot of time.
Some critters are faster CuSidhe, White Wyrms etc.. they start with higher hit points and str than a base fresh tamed mule.
