Freezing screen, need help!

Post by fingers »

Ok, i'll try to put as much details that i can. Three months ago, I was playing on the same laptop I use atm. One day, I dropped a beer on the keybord and everything froze. I found out that my HD doesnt drink and drive

Meanwhile, i have put the laptop asside and it was on the floor in my bedroom. One early morning, I walked on it and exploded the screen. All i can see on it now is 4X5 inches on the left corner. Also, when checking what was wrong with it (hard drive), I have put the screws somwhere and I never found them. The worst thing is that I had no drivers installed when i crashed the screen, so I couldnt plug my destop computer monitor to install all the drivers. I finally managed to put all drivers and I am sure there are the correct ones, as the laptop is a Dell latitude D610 and all I needed on dell website to download the right drivers was to put the number that is under the laptop. Everything but UO works like a charm with the current setup wich is:

Dell lattitude D610, 1 gig ram, Pentium M 1.86 GHZ. OS: windows XP familly edition, sp3. I am connected to the internet wirelessly via Mini pci Dell truemobile 1300. My system also says I have a Broadcom netxtreme 57XX gigabit controller card.

Now, every few minutes, everything on my screen freezes. i can walk the usual 3 steps and then block. Players see me walking thoses 3 steps, even if for me, all npc have stoped walking all players as well and no text will appear on my screen. Then, if the paperdoll is opened, I can press logout and the quit gump will appear. If the paperdoll is not opened, i cant open it and i need to click on the X to close client. What is even more wierd, is that once frozen, if i use the sync button that razor has, i can walk 3 steps at a time to a fairly far location and relog at that location, as you will see on the pictures that i will put in attachement. Finally, I am sure that it is not a software problem of the downloaded client as I uninstalled this client that i downloaded from UOEX website 4 days ago. Reinstalled it. Uninstalled and then downloaded a very old version (second age), uninstalled and reinstalled the uoex version, also tried in 3d. All versions would do the exact same thing. I tried several other things such as disabeling sound, connectiong with connectuo, I went with 16 and 32 bit colors awith every screen size imaginable, unchecked smart cpu and negotiate features with server in razor (btw, the game does the same thing with or without razor). Well thats all that comes to my mind atm. Any help will be appreciated, as the game is almost unplayable atm for me. Please, do not suggest me to buy a new computer because it is not an option for me and all the other programs work fine.

Thanks,

Polar bear

p.s.: the order for the pictures is inversed. On the third one, I am frozen. As you can see the names wont display, between the third and the second picture, i have press sync button multiple times and ended up to the new spot. I closed the client and opened it to take the fist picture where i run fine again

I went to the Dell site and checked the drivers you mentioned, the broadcom driver version if you downloaded from the Dell web site is from 2006, it may help to download the latest version from the Broadcom site, I checked and the driver versions were released in 2010. It might not help, but it's worth a shot.

Actually, when i checked the broadcom driver I have on the computer, it was not running at all. The broadcom thingy is for a ethernet card. Looks like im connection to the internet with my mini pci card. To tell you a confidence, I connect to the internet thru my friend and neighbor wireless network 8)

Is there another network you can try it on? Take it with you next time you go to some coffee shop or fast food joint with wi-fi and see if it does the same thing. For all we know this is some problem with your neighbor's wireless. UO is particularly sensitive to variations in ping that wouldn't even be noticed by more modern games.

Oh you could go to the Start Menu, click Run, type CMD into the box that comes up. That'll give you a command prompt. Then type:

ping -n 10 yahoo.com

And wait for the result. That'll ping yahoo ten times, then give you the average speed and a notice of any lost packets. If it's general network performance rather than something UO related, that would let us know.

I doubt that the connection is the issue. I actually dont drop connection when i freeze, it's more like some stuff refuses to load. With razors sync macro, even frozen, even when all npc dont move, even when no text appears, i can move three steps at a time, sync again, repeat and go as far as I want. Honestly, if someone comes with a solution that I try and stop the freezing, I promiss to pay your effort 5 mil gold ;-)

here's my 2 cents worth or 1/5 of an eds. i'm not really good with computer or programming, i'm not a smart guy, but i do have a brain, and here's what i think.

need to update all drivers especially the video card driver. when you spilled beer on the laptop you may have damaged the video card.

that all sounds like something that happened to a friend of mine who dropped soda on his laptop, and kept freezing in game (long time ago 1998. sometimes all you need to do is update the video driver (system manager), but in extreme case's you may have to replace the whole video card. does it play other games without a problem?

for some stupid reason under the keyboard they decided to put some of the important things. ie...memeory... it could be that the liquid hit a capacitor and now your discharging wrong, or a power surge happened and damaged your hardware. does it only happen with uo? any other games?

personally i dislike laptops; you really can't upgrade (yeah i know you can upgrade memory, hd, some video, and some sound cards), but you can't switch case's..your stuck with that screen.

because you stepped on the screen could be a broken screen. i dunno. just thought i would give some suggestions. oh yeah another thing bad about laptops, changing screen's is a pain.

Hail again,

I have decided to test the client on other uo servers. I stayed 30 minutes on one and did not freeze at all. Here, I cant do more than 10 minutes without freezing. I am wondering if the problem wouldn't be server side. Maybe it's router does not like where I live. I also know that one of my daughters played a few minutes yesterday and froze as well.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello, I have some questions for you:

1. If you stand entirely still, without clicking on anything, would you still find yourself freezing?
(Try alone, then let me know of your answer and the outcome of making this change)

2. Are you attempting to play with your sound enabled (In your client)? (Answer the following based on standing still)
A. If yes, please turn your volume up and walk around with a sound playing. When you freeze, let me know how it effects the sound of the instrument or environmental sound:
I. Does the sound stop?
II. Does it begin to hiccup?
III. Does it stick?
B. Please turn sound off.
I. Do you still find yourself freezing?

3. What screen resolution are you currently playing in?
(Please let me know your answer)

We will go from here.

Yes, if i go sit at bank for an example, i will get the freeze in less than 10 minutes. I actually always freeze in 10 minutes or less. Also, most of the times, when i freeze, I will need to reload 2 or 3 times the client before being able to play. On the first tries, it loads the reward gump, the whole picture, myself, and previous monster corps that i killed on the ground, but my life bar will show no lines and if there are other unkilled monsters, they wont load. Note that I am connected, as if I stay there frozen, the server will still make me kill the monsters that i dont see (I hold a bow). Also remember that even frozen, i can press the razor sync button and move three step, do it again and again and end up far away. When I get to log correctly, I am at the last spot where I moved while frozen.

I was using your wistling popsicle, i had the uo music playing in background. The music in background still runs and the popsicle stops wistling. When i try to use it frozen, i get the message: ingoring action request (already queued), possibly a razor message.
+Rayne wrote:II. Does it begin to hiccup?
Nope
+Rayne wrote:III. Does it stick?
Nope
+Rayne wrote:B. Please turn sound off.

Tried that, yes I still freeze
+Rayne wrote:3. What screen resolution are you currently playing in?
1024X768 (windows setting)
In the game options, it is written full screen resolution: 800X600, but i did not check full screen resolution box. Under its written 80X600 as well

I assume you have done a complete uninstall and reinstall of the Ultima Online for UOEX. However:

1. Have you also deleted your desktop folder(s)?

I first downloaded the client on UOEX website. Uninstalled, deleted all files. Downloaded a very old (second age) version of uo. Uninstalled and trash all files as well. Downloaded the uoex client again. Reinstalled. All did the same freeze. I even tried the 3d version in the uoex package, same exact thing.

Note that this client has been running like a charm (no freeze) for the last two hours on an other free uo mondain legacy server.

1. Alright, dare I ask if you also made sure your registry was cleaned of Ultima Online entries? (If you are unsure of how to accomplish this, it's best not to try without first receiving proper direction).

2. Also, may I suggest that you try my previous questions, while logged in using an avenue other then Razor.
