I'm having some issues getting my stats up. Does it just take a long time to get them up or is there some sort of trick to it on this shard. And what are the best skills to use here for getting them higher?

Your stats can only increase once every 15 minutes. Check out the stats guide on the wiki for detailed descritpions on what effects what.
