While experimenting with the enhance feature on some looted weapons, I have noticed that holding an Ancient Smith Hammer in your hands (to improve success rates) uses charges from the Ancient Smith Hammer, even if you are double clicking on a standard smith hammer in your pack.

What happens if you are using a runic smith hammer in your pack while holding an Ancient Smith Hammer in your hands? Do you lose charges from just one or the other, or both?

It basically works like this - ancient smithy hammers increase you smithing skill when wielded, but each use (of the skill - crafting an item, enhacing) costs one charge. Runic hammers add properties to items when used (not wielded) each use consuming a charge. So you can basicaly combine both for a higher (exceptional) chance and the props from runics. Their effects are independent of each other, so both will consume charges.
