Re: smithing noob question
First, the main skill, which belongs to smithy is mining.
Explains himself, as by knowing the materials, a smith can work with.
So, besides Blacksmithy, a high mining skill is required.
Secondly, creating any item is like a pyramid, watching the materials and item difficulty.
Low materials like iron have a wide chance of creating exeptional.
Same goes to the item itself.
Its more logical, creating a dagger is far easy than creating a plate breastplate.
Next goes to the runics.
Same thing here. A normal creation is like doing the normal work, using a runic (or special tool) means, you create a special or maybe unique item.
Chances for exeptionals are logically lower than for normals.
Latest goe to....eating !!
Huh?...yes, as for much skills, like taming f.e., also for smithy, a well feeded char has a higher chance of success.
So far my two cents.
If I`m wrong at any details (which may be by custom on this shard), pls any player may correct the specific part.
Fare thee well, happy mining and....*whistle while you work*

Re: smithing noob question
Actually, the exceptional chance is rarely influenced by anything else other than your BS skill. If you look at the item description It will give you a minimal skill level to create it, chance to create at current skill and the chance for exceptional. Minimum create chance is 30% if you match the skill level required exactly. It then increases by 0,2% for each 0,1 skill point. Exceptional chance is regular chance - 45%. So if you have 90% chance to craft say a plate tunic, then there is a 45% chance it'll be exceptional. (Exceptional chance for other crafting skills is not always calculated the same way - I know Fletching does it differently, others might as well.)
Contrary to what previous poster said - mining has no influence on smithing success (unless noted on the item page - few craftables require mining and/or other skills). Likewise - colored runic tools (like bronze, golden platinum etc) have no influence on success - they only determine the amount and power of magical enhancements on an item when crafted. Eating has no influence, chances are fixed and match exactly what is displayed in the info box for a given item. Material does not influence chances - there's a minimum skill to work with a given material, but once this is met, there is no influence of material on item creation, apart from the stats.
Things that do influence exception chance are the Ancient smithy Hammer +XX - it increases your smithing (over the cap) so in turn - your (exc) success chance. These come in a variety of levels from +10 to +60 with prices ranging from 50k to 2m. Or so. Each has 600 uses.
Also +Smithing clothes - these (same as Ancient Sm Hmr) come as rewards from Smithing BODs and increase your skill over the cap. They have no uses (bonus applies as long as you wear them) but the +Smith is smaller: you have +1 (few k gold), +3 (150k or so), +5 (2 mill or so). There are 6 armor pieces for 6 different slots - head, neck, torso, arms, gloves and legs. You can mix and match the + depending on pieces you have (or can afford).
