Is this shard for me?

Hello,

I'm a long time UO fan. I started playing just before T2A back when OSI ran things. Sadly, all things come to an end. Since then I've tried a few custom shards, but nothing felt like home. Most are filled with griefers who like nothing better than to jack newbies and leave them stranded in BFE.

I'm looking for a fun, supportive PvM/Roleplay community. I'm not against PvP, I just want to crawl a dungeon from time to time.

Also on other shards, placing anything but a small deed requires an act of god. Why did I just spend a week grinding out a large brick deed just to have it collect dust?

Is this shard for me?

Thanks,
-Swords

avg. number of players online is around 150ppl with around 175-200 during peak times. I'm sure others will write more regarding the shard.

"an act of god"

Do you mean that it takes a lot of time and effort to get stuff (resources etc.) or that some stuff is only doable via staff or something? :?

Either way i'd say that this is a very friendly PvM/PvE shard, and it's quite easy to get started in here. No skillcap and easy skillraising. Don't be afraid to ask for help, i'm sure many will be ready to do so, including myself :woot:

PvP is very restricted here and you pretty much can't do any harmful acts to others (PK/steal stuff from them) unless you are in PvP dungeon or in a guild (which allows you to go berserk on guildmates  but many guilds do not allow PKing inside guild)

Scamming and similar behavior is not common here, at least i don't remember seeing any... So don't worry about that kind of people. :P

And lastly: welcome to Excelsior Shard! Hopefully you find this place as your home for many years to come

Peace, Gaara

I played on the shard about 2-3 years back and just came back less then a month ago.

It's fun. No skill cap. Some great customs.

There's plenty of room still open to build a large house in (I just placed an 18x12 and an 14x9, and only smaller sizes because of the spot I chose to place them in, could easily have done two 18x18). The GMs/Admins will also place a house for you in areas that normally otherwise couldn't be built in (for a cost, see the wiki).

You can have two houses, more if buy extra slots with EDs, and can merge the foundations so have one giant house. Can sink the foundation or even a full story below grade (for EDs).

When you mention deeds, that's a very old OSI concept and not in use anymore. You use the house placement tool and can place customized houses (just like in "real" UO).

I enjoy farming dungeons as well as crafting. I've always been able to get plenty of gold together. The issue (and why I've quit 2 other shards) has been room to place larger homes. Maybe I just suck at placing. But if i have to spend more time looking for an empty lot than i did earning the gold... I get pretty frustrated.

I must plead ignorance here, as nearly all my experience has been in or around the T2A era. Click the deed, click the ground, sigh, repeat.

Where on the UO timeline does this shard sit? Post 3D? UO:R? Custom?

Thanks for your responses!

Welcome to Excelsior! I hope you've found your "home" here with us. Our shard is running around the ML/SE era, with some bits and pieces added on from other expansions.

Placing a house can be frustrating here as it is anywhere, but generally speaking most players have at least 1 18x18, usually 2, by the time their account reaches 60 days. Anyone who ever played on a very packed shard, or on OSI itself will probably have the proper perspective to understand how much easier it is here, even if it does take a little while. Further, the staff can place a house for a player (the fee is 50k tokens and the gold cost of the plot itself), so long as it's on even ground and the obstructions are small. We can place over small rocks, mushrooms, short bushes; but not trees, century plants, tall grasses or uneven ground.

Hope that helps :)

To answer a few of your questions...
- We average over 120 + players at any given time of day. We have many different people here from all over the world. Not just one country.

- We have a very extensive PVM system as we do not allow PVP unless it is in pre defined areas ... So if you wanted to take a run thorugh Fire or Ice ... You are more than welcome to with out fear that some one will come and kill you ....

- We also have Many GM and Player Hosted events on this shard.

- As for housing ... This I can say ... we have many Areas to place houses. And new areas come and go on a regular basis here. So placing a house is not all so difficult.

- We have many supportive players here. We have many guilds that welcome brand new players to the UO community as well as Old Vets who want to find a Shard they can Retire on (such as myself ) You will always find some "Drama" on ocasion but The GM's All of them do a wonderful job at keeping it as minimial as they can.

... In conclusion the best way to see if Excelsior is the right fit for you is to come and Join us. Give us a try. With the number of custom features we have this shard fills the needs of a wide varity of players and skill levels.

I've played on and off from around 97. Left permanently around 04, then tried a few custom servers. This is by far my favorite. Plenty of customs, always something to do (from farming and strengthening custom animals, to leveling weapons or yourself through relayers). NOt to mention the classic fun that is this game. It combines all the favorites from every era I've experienced. I like the lack of PVP. On a large server, it's cool. But on smaller ones like others I've tried, it's a headache. Being a noob is fun, but not when you get ganked after some hard work by some group of reds standing in a safe zone near the only popular town entrance. Add to that, that Nyx is opening a new facet sometime around spring, makes this place really fun and exciting. Plus what everyone else mentioned. The no skill cap is a big turn on as well. You can do anything you want! Hope this helps and welcome!
