The 2c of a newbie...... Whatever that is worth

Post by TheWatcher »

Hey all

First off let me apologise I am writing this on my iPhone so it may contain some errors.

I've been with the shard for 2 months (65 days to be exact) and I truely am loving every minute of it. I was lucky enough to find myself in a guild and the majority of people here have been fantastic helping me out along the way. I am very lucky in that I have a high disposable income due to my situation in life. So might have had a leg up on some others my age being able to afford an omni and 120 taming for example.

The issues I am having lie in the so called divide between vets and newbies and the changes to spawns.

With 15 or so days of grinding organics I was able to buy 2 18x18 houses a maxed nightmare and 2 maxed mules (thanks blaze :)). I then hit doom, dreadhorn and a couple of other places and made my first million. With some afk macroing I had ledgendary archer with 3 maxed pets and decent gear after just 20 days and a donation for lore and taming. Before I had even lost my "young status". Having played on a few shards I can tell you the time grinding away to even make a 2 story house takes longer.

So I don't really see a big divide in the shard bewteen the elite and newbs. Granted if it was a pvp shard I'm sure I would, no doubt I'd get owned, but in a Pvm shard I'm not forced to face off against people with stat scrolls out the wazoo.

Looking for more stuff to challenge me I took up blazes call for new players to come along to a champ. My first experience with Druid spells. So I got myself a Druid book and went out soloing champs. After a few champs I soloed my first champ moa spawn. (also punched out the mule and killed it anyway). After some reading of the wiki I found a path from rikktor, Moa and coon, back to gate, marble island, arachnid then to either ice or fire. In the months I have played I can tell you this I can count on one hand the amount of times I wasn't able to find a spawn active to solo or help out with.

As far as the alt camping at spawns I never really noticed it. As I said more often then not I found a spawn. That is not to say it doesn't happen. By all means the fact that the new rules stop it happening I think is great I am all for it. In fact when I found out how much running I did to get to spawns I was upset I didn't think of it ;P I can also live with 1 spawn every 8 hours. It means 3 a day upsetting but I can live with it.

My real gripe is with the drop in the number of scrolls. IMHO this will throw the economy out of wack. PS prices will skyrocket. As it is there is an 8 person wait for tactics, taming etc. In "tha book" from my understanding the lesser scrolls are traded in for better ones. If blaze or krazy were to solo 2 spawns they would have even with 110s enough to trade for a 115 etc thus making a higher probability for higher end scrolls. Now they are looking at doing 10-12 spawns to get the same amount of scrolls. 120s will become more scarce thus making prices rise.

Personaly I did my run yesterday about an hour of running through fel to do a spawn and walk away with ONE 110. Throw in 30k gold (if someone doesn't join after 15 candles, you let them in and they picky nettle and recall out, story for another topic) and I have about 37k for an hours work. Not worth the time. So will that mean more people like me deciding it's not worth the hassle and producing even less ps on an already thin market?

As I said I have no issue with the other changes. The less exploiting the better, but I feel the drop in ps will only have a negative effect on the shard. The other rules should stop alt camping. I don't see what this rule will do other than dry up the ps market. How long before we start seeing anat and tactics scrolls going for a mil?

Yep, we just did a 4 guys mephisto. 15 minutes to regroup and go there, 30 minutes to do the champ, go back at BB and split the gold. 34k + 110 spirit speak, wow, probably 40k for an hour. I can do that in 10 minutes killing monsters. Blaze was pretty clear that he will never do a spawn again, same for me. I beleive spawns will be plenty available for new players. If you have a 120 taming or 120 lore, i suggest you hold on it as I am quite sure under the new rules, they will soon be worth 10 mil +. Since most of us payed under 1 mil for 120 taming scrolls, I feel bad for the new players not scrolled yet.

Greetings to all,

This is my point exactly. I too was at the spawn, and it upset me greatly to hear both of you say you will no longer be doing them.

I do understand the reasoning for the rule change. It is meant as a chance for newer players to tag along and also as a means to promote "team play". I think the fact blaze who showed me to my first spawn, is no longer spawning might make the rule change do the opposite. Some of the spawns in the game are close to impossible without a vet casting trees and whatnot. Thus negating new players doing them anyway. The new rule does not encourage team play, but rather punishes a person for being able to solo one.

Maybe a better option is to have spawns that reward team play. For eg tougher spawns harder if not impossible for one player to finish where the chance of120s is higher. I know nothing of coding so I am not sure how hard suggestions are so I will not suggest more.

I also would like to state this is not an attack on anyone nor will I down tools and quit. I love the shard and think the staff should be commended on the job they do. The fact there was such a great open dialog after the recent changes made me respect you guys even more.

I was doing ice spawn the other day And while I was holed up in my stone circle trees there was a player running around on the WW stage with nothing but magery and melée. I thought to myself this guy is a champion. My fear is that with less combat Ps available we will become a shard of tamers and nothing more.

I would also like to add that it is not a greed thing either. I would be happy to never do a champ again if it meant ps prices staying within reach and other young players getting the same buzz I got when tagging along to do rikktor with the vets.

I think I've given about 4c worth now :)

Please note that, if this were real life...

120 tactics = Harvard diploma
120 taming = Princeton diploma
120 lore = Berkley diploma

Legacy of the archmagi = Porsche 911
Cap of knowledge = Lamborghini Gallardo

Everybody wants it :) Well maybe not the diplomas... but if something gives you an advantage, then I'd say everyone wants it.

Fact is... I "ruined" the powerscroll market by adding the powerscroll bag. But now that it's in, I can't just take it back.
So to balance out the problem, I reduced the amount of scrolls that a champion drops.
It will drop around 1-2 per player, but a maximum of 6.

Hopefully this will make more chance for all players to do a champion. The prices of powerscrolls will rise, that is true, but imagine the happiness when you will get a 120 taming from killing a champion :)

Note that I had this on my list since May.
Another thing I'd want to add, is that after we sell a few more powerscroll bags in auctions, they will be available from either the gold or the token stone.

P.S.: With team work there's almost no less powerscrolls coming into the game.

Not directing this at you TheWatcher, it 's just a trend I've noticed alot lately....

Seems like alot of folk who have been here 2-3 months, are out solo'ing champs, prancing around in several mages inquisition pieces, and taking bio's and their maxed mules/nobles out for hunts. It's not that terribly hard, just do some traing macro'ing, save your gold, and go buy stuff you can very easily get extremely powerful. My point is that it is too easy. Scrolls (were) a dime a dozen, pets are fairly cheap, and a quick $20 donation gets you the strongest spellbook in the game.

Alot of this stuff was originally designed to take a long time to do (i.e. mage quest, getting 120 ps's, making bio's....) Now it seems like everyone here expects to be maxed out, killing the Dark Father barehanded, riding on a death dealing, firebreathing mount with a lvl 100 Weapon.

I not sure where I was going, but it seems like there isn't much of a difference between a vet and a newcomer, other then a vet has more deco in their house, and more gold in the bank.

I agree with you totally Ruewyn, and that was sort of my point. It is very easy for a new player like myself, to be able to prance around with my Bio, maxed Mules and most powerful spell book in the game (havent got mages inquisition stuff on though, still working on that :P). So I am not offended at all. I was hearing alot of "this needs to be changed to give a new player a chance", which in my opinion is wrong. There needs to be something to strive for and something not easy to complete to give you something to continue playing for.

It appears I was wrong in in my assumption that I thought the whole point of the rule change was to reduce the gap between New and old player, where in reality it will widen it, as PS' are now harder to come by thus more rare. Now it will be a case of people working alot harder for their "degrees". I apologise for misinterpreting the meeting we had the other day.

My only fear is that, In a super perfect world now when champs are on they will be anounced in global and a group will charge off to complete them with everyone collecting a PS for their trouble, however, I believe they will still be soloed with only 1 PS received instead of the 6 on offer. I hope I am wrong.

Thank you coli for posting and clearing this issue up with me. I appreciate the time taken to do so.

I will continue to do spawns announcing when they are on, mainly in the hope of taking some newer players along so they too can pick up scrolls and have the rush of a champ spawn.

I shall be content I got all my degrees from timbucktoo community college :) and got out early into the job market, before those students still trying to complete their masters from Harvard :P ( I like that analogy)

One thing some of you need to realize, is that most, not all, but most of the "new players" you refer to, that have all these amazing items are guilded. They belong to a guild that virtually hands them anything and everything. I've had players leave my guild (where we work as a team, instead of a charity service), with decent gear, etc.. who I would see less than a week later with Mage's Inquisition gear.. custom named weapons, skeletal steeds, etc etc.

Now, I'm not a Vet, so I can't grant my guild everything their heart desires.. and not to turn this into an advertisement.. but MY guild relies on a rank structure, so that all who join it, get even portions. Most of my ex-guildies left simply for the free hand outs they get from Vet guilds. Like I said in another thread.. in my first 30 days here I managed to accrue 29 days worth of play time.. think about that.. that's roughly 690 hours out of 720.. maybe 10-20 of those were afk macroing.

My point is.. you can't say that just because newer players have equivalent gear to that of Vets, doesn't mean it's because its easy.. they had it easy, not necessarily the rest of the newer members. I busted my rear for the first 30 days I was here and still didn't come close to these new players who get a druid book handed to them by their guildmaster before they make their first 50k.

Reducing the available PS's may satisfy Vets' eagerness to make it harder on newer players, but it certainly won't resolve the issue of more champ availability etc. The hour limit might help.. but when most champs have a longer respawn timer than this new time limit between champs.. how does that make sense?

The problem, in my mind, never really revolved around newer players having it too hard.. its more that when you look around.. everything is controlled by older players.. economy and spawns being the largest. Sit in at an auction once.. you'll see things bid on for over a mill that most wouldn't pay 100k for.. Its because you have Vets who can throw money around, etc etc. If you really want to control how "easy" us newer members have it.. well then lets remove the Vet guilds.. See, most Vets only hand out freebies to their guildmates.. and then the occasional random player..

I'm not trying to trash the fact that there are Vets kind enough to help newer players.. but when some people run around preaching about the "easiness" the "noobs" have.. it gets under my skin. Not all of them/us have the luxury to join a guild owned by a Vet with 20 mill for chump change, a 4 plot house, a dozen druid books, and chests full of arties with level deeds.. I respect these Vets for their accomplishments, but its really unbelievable when the ones who hand out these invaluable items for free to their guild, are the very same ones whining that others have it too easy.. hypocrisy.. period..

You gotta look at the big picture.. not just make ill-conceived assumptions about that little one... :displeased:

See I agree with some of these points as well, which leaves me conflicted I guess, and I can only go off personal experience given that I am a newbie.

My guild as great as they are have never given me handouts. Advice, help, people to hunt and hang out with and a res when I die yes but never a handout. However like I said even without donations I could still be where I am today minus an omni and a bio. Still more than capable of earning a lot of gold and hunting most things on the shard.

Rewards for donating are probably the major thing out of reach for newbs who can't donate in RL. A horselord goes for what 200k? 100k tokens doesn't take an aweful long time to accrue. I think I have 300k odd now. A couple of hundred k for a full suit and a maxed bunny or two and you can hunt a lot of things on the shard. 200k more for some hives and there is more money coming in. It's not hard to be set up in weeks. Granted I am not guildmaster trying to keep a whole guild happy, so I can't comment on your personal situation.

Having said all of that, I don't claim that it is easy to get set up but I think it is doable.

Seems my holiday is over and now that I'm doing 12 hour shifts again portal and forums are all I have to entertain me. Good ole iPhone. So if my rambling is annoying anyone please feel free to pm me and tell me to shut it :)

I think the great thing about the changes are the open dialogue and conversation they have opened up on these forums. I check them daily and until recently they were all quiet on the western front, with the exception of some selling and flaming. I applaud the efforts by all to make this awesome shard even betterer...er... Even awesomerer!

Aye, well.. as I said.. not all guilds act as though they're the Salvation Army.. lol

And as for the donations, well.. that's another thing to factor in as well..

I wasn't trying to come at you.. just trying to point out that there are those who have it a tad bit easier than the next new player, whether it be by joining the local Welfare Office in-game, or by donating RL cash..

Either way.. most new players do have it easy.. but usually because of the 2 aforementioned things..

Lol welfare office.....

Anyway

it is hard to convey intent as well as I would like on the iPhone. I have fat fingers so sometimes I have to "mash the keypad to speak to an operator" I do realise you aren't coming at me and I do have the advantage of running my own sucessful business and being at a stage where I am too old for video games, but playing them anyway.

I do have the advantage over some others which is why I try to help where possible both within and out of my guild. I hope others are doing the same.
