Hello friends, I dug this up in UOstratics for a member who had no access to that site (for some reason).
CHAPTER ONE - "Where do I start?"
So, you want to be a treasure hunter? Do you dream of finding long lost treasure? Are you prepared to fight the guardians left to protect that long lost treasure? Ancient wyrms, blood elementals, lich lords…oh my! If you have answered yes to both then you are ready to start down the path of the treasure hunter.
Where do I start? There are 2 skills that define the treasure hunter, Cartography and Lock Picking . You use cartography to decipher the treasure maps that you find and you use lock picking to open them once you have dug them up.
There are other skills related to assist in treasure hunting but are rarely used since the templates are very crowded. These skills are Detect Hidden, Remove Trap, and Mining.
CHAPTER TWO - "Why do I need mining?"
Why is mining needed? What bonuses does it give.
Mining lets you have a wider radius to dig in to successfully dig up the chest.
0 to 50.9 mining gives a 1 tile radius (in other words, you must dig the exact correct spot of the chest)
51 to 80.9 mining gives a 2 tiles radius
81 to 99.9 mining gives a 3 tiles radius
100 mining gives a 4 tiles radius
CHAPTER THREE - "Treasure Maps? What're those?"
Treasure hunting is one of the most challenging and rewarding activities in Ultima Online. Ranging from the simple but straightforward level 1 maps to the downright scary level 6′s, there’s a whole host of new experiences to be had with treasure hunts.
All maps can be done alone if you have the necessary skills and equipment, though level 5, 6 and 7 maps are a lot faster and easier with a group along to help. Level 1 maps are vastly different than the other five classes of maps, in that they can be easily tackled alone without caution or backup. Level 2 and higher maps need you to take care at all times, or you might end up dead : )
Treasure maps can be found as loot on a wide selection of the creatures in the game. These maps range in difficulty on an internal scale of 1 to 6
Where do I find maps you ask?

CHAPTER FOUR - "I have a map – now what do I do with it?"
Once you find a map, simply double click it to decode it. Your ability to decode the map is based on your cartography skill – the higher your skill, the more likely you are to be able to decode any and all treasure maps.
(If you are unable to decode a map, you may pass it along or sell it to someone who can). These maps may be stored safely in your bank, until you decide to hunt for it; for the treasure will not begin to “decay away” until you actually dig up the chest (after which time the chest and its contents will linger for about no more than 3-4 hours).
Required Skill:
Map Level Map Descr. Skill Level
1 Plainly Drawn 27.0* cartography required
2 Expertly Drawn 71.0 cartography required
3 Adeptly Drawn 81.0 cartography required
4 Cleverly Drawn 91.0 cartography required
5 Deviously Drawn 100 cartography required
6 Ingeniously Drawn 100 cartography required
7 Diabolically Drawn 100 cartography required
*Approximate, varies between 27 to 30, but this isn’t a problem, as you can be trained to over 30 skill, so you can decode level 1′s as soon as you have trained. You can also gain cartography skill by attempting to decode a level one map. Eventually you will be able to read it. If you get a message in the lower left of your screen saying “this map is too difficult to attempt to decode” then it is not a level one map, and you will not gain from trying to decode it.

Re: Treasure Map Help
This is very helpful, thanks! I have two questions after reading: first, what treasure should I to find in each map type? Is there a list somewhere? Second, where do you find level 7 maps? Those weren't listed a far as I could tell. Thanks!
Re: Treasure Map Help
No level 7 maps. Level 6 (Ingenious) are the highest. The text on Stratics seems to contradict itself.
As for the treasure, each chest contains (amount of loot and quality varies between chest levels - those given here are for highest level 6): some reagents (about 6-10 stacks of up to 60 of random reagents, some random scrolls (about 20 of those), random equipment (armor and weapons, nothing truly exceptional, again up to 20), 5000 gold pieces and (ONLY! for level 6 chest) a chance of an artifact from a separate list (the artifact is usually placed last, thus it's on top of all the other stuff).
Monster guardians appear after digging up the chest (3-4 of them) then gradually, by one, as you clear out the chest. It can be profitable to trash all items from the chest for lvl 6's as the guardians carry good loot themselvelves. Also - the creature types are random, but always be prepared (take out your pets, cast buffs, etc.) to face 4 of the most dangerous type - ie. if you can't face 4 ancient wyrms or balrons at once them you might reconsider doing lvl6 maps.
Level 6 chests are guarded by Poison Elementals, Blood Elementals, Titans, Ancient Wyrms, Balrons.
Level 5 is Poison Elementals, Blood Elementals, Lich Lords, Deamons, Elder Gazers
(never did lower levels so if someone can complete the list it'd be nice)
Oh, to all treasure hunters - please remove the chests after you are done!. Single click the chest and select "Remove chest". If left at the site they block any other treasure hunt in the same spot until they decay, which is a few hours. Frustrating.
