Honor

Post by KnitePrince1 »

Mild rant;

First... I dont hunt much anymore for this very reason.. let me explain;
A friend of mine trying to get started here is hunting Balrons.. has two pets, all they can afford atm... BOTH pets fighting the Balron and using their bow... another player runs in, and attacks with 5 pets, kills balron and claims it...

OK, once, not htta big a deal, ignore it and go on... this happened to my friend, three times today, three different players.. Even though i was not a part of it, it makes me upset..
Is there no honor left? Are these players so desperate, that they are willing to give up their respect and their Honor to steel these kills? I honestly wish there was a way to Ban them from purchasing anything from my vendors.. but All I can really do is refuse to help them if they ask questions, or refuse to sell them something i am selling directly.. i told my friend to report it.. and so they did, but there were no GM's on, so they just logged out.. apparently, the last to do this said exactly that.. we dont have GM's on so theres nothing you can do about it...
Is even Excelsior being dragged down into the quagmire of dishonor and disrespect? Is this last bastion of fairness and honor among players falling like so many shards before it?
I love this shard, its why I have been here over 4 years... I did get tired of trying to report the 12 year olds, and more or less stopped hunting.. but it seems I cannot escape the results, because now those i am trying to recruit TO this shard are facing the lack or respect and honor among the players. Two of those I talked into joining have left, and it appears one more of the three remaining is headed down the same road... It fills me with sadness, that there are so many who have no consideration for those they play along side of.. its just a game, but the game reflects the type of person you really are.

Hi there,

Anytime you submit a page, if you must log out but still wish the page to be seen by us, go back to the 'help' menu, and it will ask you whether you want to escalate the page and not receive further alerts. This way it gets sent to us even if the player logs out. It is also good to use 'verbal harassment' when paging, if you have tried to speak to the player in question, or if they have said something like you mentioned, "there's no gm's on so who cares' kinda thing, it will get transmitted to us along with your page and we can see for sure that this player said such a thing, and handle them accordingly. That is, you must send the page immediately after the talking takes place, while it is still in your journal. If it isn't in your journal, it won't be shown.

Kill stealing is against the rules, and while it's difficult to prove in order to punish for it if we don't see it happening in the actual moment, we still log the pages against the player for future reference. This way, if there are many pages from different players about one person KS'ing all the time, there's a pattern of behavior and we can step in.

This is nothing new as I have had the same issues on and off since I have been here. However, there is a few things you can do if you have a mind to. First of all, get the names AND guild of the offender. I have contacted guild leaders before and they had some effect to fixing the problem. But first, you should pm the person and and see what they have to say in repsonse. If they are a rude in there pm as in their game play, you have a record of their conversation on your portal that you can take a screenshot of. There you may be able to send that off to +Nyx or +V for assistance. But, I will let them say if they concur with that idea. The last thing you can do and this is something that I have done before is to publicly shame them with a forum post after warning them that you will do that if they continue. Believe it or not, once the shard knows that an individual acts like that, they find out that they have few friends left and eventually leave. Yes there are some with no honor here, and some who just don't pay attention, but for the most part, the shard is full of honorable and trustworthy players. That is one of the major reasons why this shard is so popular.

Thank you Nyx, that is good information. I will see that it is forwarded, and hopefully... keep my family and friends that have not left already.. playing here.

Cygnus.. You are one that has always acted with honor, and I meant no disrespect to you or those who carry a like amount of consideration..
My concern, is that many do not even KNOW that what they are doing is not honorable, the greater concern is of course that know, but do not care.. but this exact scenario happened to me and the player that did it.. apparently had no idea that it was inconsiderate.. I turned my own frustration aside, and HELPED that player at a later date, and had a good conversation with a person that SEEMED considerate, and hopefully helped them with what they needed.. only to have them do it again the very next day.. while waving/bowing before they finished killing my mob then running on ahead to the next one.. I just sort of sat there confused, packed up my mules and left.. I didnt page, or complain, didn't even say anything, but it's a little different when my friends get mistreated.. harder to look away / ignore.

Hi Knight,
I also hunted ballys for some time with pets and saw the same.
Ppl rush in, no greet, just kill, claim, gone.
Such gets more frustrating, if the players do by recall.
Sometimes ppl also attack, even its clear seeable, the mob is
already attacked by the first player.
Excuses like "I just wanted to help" are not rare then, even
though, its total nonsens.

The really best decision for the "low" ones is, to just let
"the established" do their mobs.
Arguing will make the new always loose anyway.
Just choosing an other spawn, dealing with lower income.
One day, also they will have their 5x emaxed nobles or imps.

But...
...isn`t it more than just human to remind, what has happened?
And in the right moment have an own, little revenge? ;)

btw....get me your friends charname.
Fairly sure, I got some pets for him for free, so he can hunt with a 5pack then.

Wow.. One thing I have noticed on this shard is that people with that little honor or maturity always end up walking over too many people over time and become bored because they end up playing alone and leave or get themselves banned somehow. Thankfully, with the social structure of this shard, it happens very quickly once their name gets out. Don't let them ruin your day. Easiest thing to do is what people have posted in this thread. When it happens to me I just spread the name somehow so others can be wary making it harder for the little shrimp to act like a donkey toward others. The reason this donkey shrimp does it in the first place is that he knows he has no game, or just doesn't know any better that he's being a donkey shrimp. Other people will be quicker to call this player out if they are already aware of the name.

I run into this every time i'm in doom. Its a matter of courtesy and the lack there of. I can only hope to see some of them dead in fel and just leave them that way cause it really is the only defense. As soon as i'm able to start doing more of the champ spawns I can also vote no when they show up late but other than that there isn't anything we can do about it.

Its interesting to note how the server reviews claim that everyone is so nice here but 4 outa 5 people will just run you over at spawns like these simply because they can. There is a subtle elitest mentality here on this server where people do what they do because they can, you can't and there is nothing you can do about it. It is one of the very few things I don't like about Excelsior.

LOL.. the Donkey Shrimp got me too. Was good to have a laugh this morning...

As far as elitist mentality, I can honestly say, it is not as bad as it used to be. When i started, you priced the items on your vendor according to how those "elitists" priced their stuff.. if you didnt, you were NOT doing champ spawns, you got no help, and no answers if you made them mad.. there were no restrictions back then on joining a champ, but those who did them regularly usually did them alone, and so I learned to do them alone as well. , I am somewhat glad that system did start to break down within a few months.. however, it had its advantages.. people didnt undercut much and prices were more stable. Tokens WERE three gold each. ED's were 20K, Oints were 1500, and Organics were 300+ ea, MAX pets (nobles/Mules) were 500K ea, Frenzies were 250K ea.. and may the UO gods have mercy on you if you tried to slash those prices. it DID make marketing/vendoring more profitable than it is now, but also took away some of the fun/freedom.
I do not now and never have considered myself Elite, despite over 4 years.. i do not struggle to have 300 Dex or 500 hp.. I play to have fun, relax, make some gold, and spend time with family and friends.. so it is a little hard to understand WHY anyone, would find kill stealing a necessary part of their game play, and it is harder still for me to understand how anyone could be so ignorant of basic human honor and consideration that they might think nothing of it until they get called out for doing it.
We should be standing together, helping each other so that the game is more enjoyable and we each gain the one thing that is more important than anything else you will find on the shard... Friendship.
( LIFE, is so short, that you do not have the time to meet everyone who would BE your friend.)
I cannot force my Morality on others, but I have to say, that it horrifies me how little morality some people have. I am not talking about religion or Law, just plain, basic Respect, consideration, and Honor... Morality!
If i see someone fighting, and they are having a bit of a struggle.. HELPING is not sending my mules in, it is running up and helping them HEAL to try to keep them, or their pets alive.

Imagine how much fun this game would be if everyone acted with a sense of Honor and respect.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Are there elitist here? I am sure there are a few, but if you say that 4 out of 5 players here are so callous that they could care less about another player and only think about themselves, I would say you got your numbers backwards. Although I mentioned earlier that I have experienced the lack of honor in other players, I have by far experienced more generosity from the player base then dishonor by 5 to 1.

If you are experiencing what you claim, then either you are the unluckiest player or you are running into the same cluprits over and over again. And trust me, the "elitist" here have no need to "steal kill" or any other dishonorable thing. What I see most from the "elitist" is maybe some snobbery or lack of tact when it comes to giving out advice out on world chat. Players who are stealing kills are far from elite status here.

One thing I can tell you is that players who resort to that kind of play style never last. Most likely because they are playing for all the wrong reasons and quickly get bored or find no enjoyment and most likely are shunned by the larger player base. I am not sure how long you have played here Tredin, I am pretty sure your outlook will change the longer you play here. If it doesn't, then I am not sure what to say, but whatever may happen, I wish you well and prosperity.

Oh, and if you are referring to players that are using a script to pop in and out of leveling spots, that is an issue, but it is far from "elitist" just using that; and having a script like that is far from making you elite.

I know all about the afk leveling Cygnus, I played here for about a year back in 09 before my computer committed suicide. I know exactly what that looks like even though I've only been back on this server for about a week.

I am referring specifically to the people who run through you at doom like you aren't even there. They show up, act like they are mute and just try to take over because they are able to kill Balrons with their multiple pieces of relayered gear and level 100 weapons. Where as I use a mule pack to do it and unfortunately my 4 out of 5 statistic is 100% accurate for the 3 Balrons in Blood.

Now that I have been using runes to hit the other Balrons in the world I have other options for when this happens but its still very frustrating. Especially when I find that someone else is doing the same thing because unlike the people at Doom I leave those people playing the recall game be instead of trying to beat them to the next spawn.

I take my time walking through everything, and never have problems with people ganking me everytime. It may happen once in a blue moon.. But hey.. It's a spawner.. It will spawn another or more. No big deal. Lets stop playing tug-o-war with the tinker toys here. Someone ganks you... Page about it and move on. +Nyx and +V are on top of this thing.. Trust me. Also trust me when I say that when someone ganks another person's spawn and gets away with 3k gold... They are NOT exactly gonna win UO with it.
