1. Is this mostly an "end-game" server?
I ask as I've played on a similar server before (an EQ emu) where the low-mid levels had virtually zero population, and the population seemed to be dominated by the top 10% of long term gamers. I like sociable games, where being in parties and interacting are part of the fun, which MMO's are (meant to be), but even when I reach close to the "end-game" scenario on these long term servers, I'm still only an ankle biter, picking up scraps from the elites, who pay no attention to myself and the other shleckers barely getting to that level.
2. Apart from the wiki, the scavenger bins, and the training rooms, what else is there to help new players learn the game?
I can link an amazing guide for another shard, which I won't for obvious reasons (PM me ifor a link), and what those new players experience when joining that server for the first time. Players that might not even have any UO experience whatsoever, will quite easily pick up the basics enough to have a good time, come out with a well balanced character, and some decent gear before leaving. It's really simple, and extremely effective.
For gaining/retracting new players (with little experience post-Renaissance, or at all), a feature like this could be great for the server. (But, I'm yet to see anything like this, so I could have missed it).
There's a part of me that really, really, really wants to come back. The new features of this servers' client compared to my current shard looks amazing, but for some reason the complexity of it all puts me off. That, and the no-limit skill point makes me feel like diversity is killed off in favor of 'god' like characters. Servers with 700-1000 skill point limits really made people focus on builds, and in big raids/parties, helped establish key roles.
Maybe I just need to give this server more of a go, but getting lost on those teleport pads was rage inducing.
Some questions for an unsure/uncommitted player
Re: Some questions for an unsure/uncommitted player
I'll take a stab at this.
1) No. There's a ton of mid-level to low-level players. They like to measure End Game players by the number of relayers they've got. Quite a few people have one or two (midgame) and even more don't have any at all (low level). Personally, I like not having any. Balrons are still scary and there's still a ton of things out there to do.
2) The wiki, whilst good, does have gaps in it's information. The best thing you can do to get information is get on world chat ( [g ) and ask people. There's a ton of helpful people who will answer questions. You could also try to get involved with a helpful guild, there are several on the shard that go out of their way to help new players.
Hopefully this helps.

Re: Some questions for an unsure/uncommitted player
Yeah, I was fortunate enough to receive an offer to join ETA, but something went wrong, and I ended up on the completely opposite side of the continent. So joining ETA never happened.
But luck would have it that Michiko sent me a message asking to meet with her and all her friends. We sat around, drank tea, and gossiped for hours! But seriously, they really helped me out with gear, information, and giving me a very long tour of skills, training, and the blasted telepad system - something which I still struggle to grasp with, as it is all memory (and my memory is fading). These guys and girls have been friendly enough to offer me endless help, so I'll be doing the same in return, and hope I'll be able to learn things more easily, especially since I feel there's a HUGE learning curve I need to get past. If I had to compare my previous shard to this, it would be like using a wet noodle ina sword fight, and the sword is this server. It's has a lot.
And I'm not sure how I'm going to go with combat compared to these guys, yet, but I guess i'll just cast the occasional spell, hide, and herd cats.

Re: Some questions for an unsure/uncommitted player
It does have a lot to learn, and we do have a lot of custom content.
Just take things one day at a time, and one thing at a time. It's not a race to the finish.
Find something you enjoy doing, and learn about that, and do that. When you get bored, move
onto the next thing. Excelsior has kept me entertained for nearly 4.5 years now, and I still haven't
done it all, or even seen it all.
You'll get used to the teleporters pretty quickly, and realize how much time they can save you!

It's funny sometimes how fast things can progress.
Since my last post I'm now in a guild and a co-owneer of a house.
This has definititely been the most interesting MMO experience I've ever played
And I've partly been able to get past the whole telepad issues with Mark/Recall runes.

Re: Some questions for an unsure/uncommitted player
You'll find that many of us here are older people but not so much older players. Many of us were around on the OSI shards when UO was new. Some of us have played other MMORPG games but wanted to return "home" to UO. Having said that, several of us have memory issues at times... and many of us actually have a small notebook right next to our keyboard for important information. This might be a huge help to you to remember the portal system. I can promise you, once you are around for a bit, the portal system is GREAT and easy to remember.
Welcome to Excelsior! If I can be of any help to you, just PM me in game.
