A new players observations and advice to other new players

Post by Adramalech »

I have been on the server for about 18 days now. Here are some observations that may help new players and the Admins.
Please read the WIKI new players guide.
http://uoex.net/wiki/New_Players_Guide
The only issue that I saw with the guide is that the spellcaster keys are in the Public->Minoc moongate. I spent 2 days looking for these keys at the regular Minoc moongate.

This is a pet server. At least starting out. You will need to max out Animal lore and Taming ASAP. Then get a level 40+ drake/dragon and head to Destard. Wil is a great tamer and usually has nice cheap pets for you. He is located by going to the moongate and choosing Public->Britain.

Seriously...max those out first then focus on other stuff.

You can AFK macro a lot of your skills. Start with hiding.
I have the luxury of working from home and I have ran several macros (using Razor) to max out my skills.

You can buy regs and blank scrolls from a vendor..but they only have 20 of each. If you buy all of them off of that vendor and wait 20 minutes, it will restock with twice as many as before. Up to a max of 999.

If you are training Magery/chivalry everyone will tell you to get a 100% reduce reagents suit. As a new player, you cant afford that. If you are training Necromancy...get a suit. I have not found Necro regs in any quantity so far.

You will want to know where to go to get the most gold. I still dont know the best places to go or how to get there. Right now I camp a couple guys in this one place. They drop about 1400 gold and sometimes drop a key that I can sell for about 10k. I don't even know what that key is used for. I don't know where these guys are. I was taken there one day by Ranrock and he showed me the ropes there. PM me and I'm sure that I can do the same for you.

This leads me into the next part. The people here. They are awesome. Not once have I been bullied since I have been here. Chat is real clean too. Everyone is super helpful unless a Champ spawn is up ;).

Vendors: If you want a vendor, better set one up that has a moongate. Contact PHX people and they might be able to help you out...on a personal note..I need to contact them about letting set up a vendor there.

[EXEX dont use this to sell anything. If you have some thing to sell put it on your vendor or sell it to someone who might be able to resell it. Using this method charges fees. However EXEX is quick. What you do want to use EXEX to do is to store your gold and other resources so that they do not take up as much bank space. Bank space is limited to 125 items and ~1000 stones.

The +60 skillball. As a new player you will have one of these in your bank. It will raise any one skill by 60 points up to its maximum. Everyone will tell you to save it until you have used a powerscroll to raise your cap to 120. If you can do that, please do so. I did not. I saw early on that taming was going to be needed to do anything starting out and used it to get taming to 100.

Dex and healing. You will want to get your dex as high as you can starting out. This will let you heal faster. When I made my heal macro, I had about an 80 dex and set the pause for 8 seconds. Now I have a 128 dex and the timer is down to 5 seconds. That decreased heal time has made a load of difference.

Cleric spells. Macro Spirit speak to 100 while you sleep then make macros for Touch of life, purge and sacred boon. These are the most powerful heals in the game. They will keep your pets alive.

Fencing: The guides tell you not to use fencing. I don't know why. I'll have to try it out.

Levelable weapons: You can either save the outrageous amount of gold needed for a 4x46 or wait it out. I used one on a 3x46 maul. I like it. 3x46 means the weapon has 3 properties at a 46% chance of proc. Apparently, you can change these items to different slots and gain the bonuses there.

Excelsior Dollars. For a donation, you can get some Excelsior Dollars(ED). You can use these to purchase some in-game items and enhancements. These are expensive. You get 10 per Euro. This is expensive because Paypal charges you for the conversion rate. To donate 50.00 US and get 500 ED, it costs ~58.00. You can buy them in game for gold. ~50,000 gold for each ED. 10 ED would cost 1 million gold.
For 400 ED, you can get a bag of holding that will hold up to 20 items (stacks count as one). This is a great item...but cost more than $40.00. But hey..you get the benefit of financially supporting the server. I would recommend lowering the cost of ED.

Thanks for the shout out! Actually, I recommend that new players create two characters: their intended main and a bootstrapper. Start the bootstrapper's animal taming at 40 and immediately use the +60 skill ball. With some cheap but decent pets, you can use the bootstrapper to hunt the dungeons for gold to buy houses, resource keys, powerscrolls, etc. Save the skill ball on your intended main character. Additional skill balls cost about 10M gold, so you want to use the free one wisely.

Also, veterinary skill is key. You'll lose your mind trying to heal poison with spells.

When you're done bootstrapping and have decent stats on your main character, you can delete the bootstrapper.

Save fencing for when you need to raise your dex. As long as you're below max, you can camp out in the training room with a fencing weapon and gain 1 point in dex every 15 minutes or so.

Wil

Glad to see a new player's report on the look&feel of the shard.

Btw, you can put stuff on [exex as a "Buy/Sell Order" (not direct) and there's no fee... but you'll have to wait a while until someone buys it (same as on a vendor, but unlike on the vendor, it doesn't charge you daily for your stock to be on there).

I noticed a couple things in your post that were either misleading, or incorrect, probably through no fault of your own. I just wanted to take the time to correct them real quick so there was less misinformation around.
If you are training Magery/chivalry everyone will tell you to get a 100% reduce reagents suit. As a new player, you cant afford that. If you are training Necromancy...get a suit. I have not found Necro regs in any quantity so far.
There are several players who sell relatively cheap LRC suits. After a few days running around, doing escorts, and the rat quest and selling the organics, 100k shouldn't be much of an issue. I haven't seen many (if any) more expensive than that.
This sounds like the citadel, which is the peerless dungeon for Travesty. There are 3 keys you need to collect from there to be able to summon the boss.
As +C mentioned, there is no fee if you set up buy/sell orders (to you, the other person pays the fees). Also, vendors have daily fees that you must pay, and if your items sit there for a bit, those fees will be much much higher than the 3% exex charges. (And you pay them, not the person buying/selling direct).

Also, your bank should not have a weight limit, just an item limit. If you need more bank space, you can purchase a deed for ED to increase the storage.
10 ED would be roughly 500,000, not 1 million gold.
Also please keep in mind, that these donations are what keeps the server running for everyone to play on. While you certainly don't have to donate, please be aware of it.

I personally think the cost of ED is too low in terms of gold, since it is so easy to earn here.

From my years of experience here, people who work for what they get tend to stay longer. Those that are handed everything (or those who buy it right away), tend to leave quicker than those who spend the time earning it. I am certain there are exceptions, but this is just my general experience.

There is a vendor stone in trinsic for reagents. 1000 reagents for 5000 gold :)

My vendor Blade at The Black Market shop sells 100% LRC for round 40k and includes at least one useful looted wep, usually with 3x hits.

Also all young players should check out the New Player Chests which have donated items including armor, weps, jewelry, pets.
They are in the new player donation room which can be accessed from Town Center via the blue portal to the east of the Town Crier.

The longer you play here, the easier it becomes up to a certain point.

As a newer player, I would tell you to focus on doing escorts, and the rat quest (every 30 minutes). I think you can even do it on multiple characters back to back. Sell the organics on exex, or to bio-engineers.

From there, figure out something that people don't like to do, but are willing to pay for. Then, as you acquire more and more stuff, it becomes even easier to earn money. The more power scrolls you buy, and skills you max out, the less you need to purchase. As you need to purchase less, you won't spend as much gold, so it becomes easier to save for the bigger things.

Remember to take your time in the beginning, and loot things that you can sell. For instance, if you are killing dragons (pretty easy to do with a couple maxed pets), loot the gems (sell at jeweler), loot the scrolls (sell at mage), cut the corpse, and save the leather to put on exex or on a vendor.

Welcome to Excelsior, best place to stay ;-)

I started writing a Beginner's Guide as well - it isn't finished, but you can check the current status for some additional hints:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jCX ... sp=sharing

- Also Trav keys sell for 20k+ - you can check the wiki for more info
- You are rewarded one ED for voting.
- ExEx is better then a vendor since you don't pay any upkeep.

You don't get ED immediately for voting. You get gold at first, then more gold, and it builds to a certain point, then you get an ED per vote.

Don't forget in town center, there is a portal to donation chests that are filled up by the players

Most guilds that accept new players have starter-kits for new players. Varies from guild to guild, Some guilds even have donation chests of their own.

While you should take the time to read through the wiki starter guides and glance at at read through some of the materials(this server is practically a totally different game from the classic UO), it is alright to ask for assistance in world-chat. Everyone was there at some point in their UO career.
